Two Simple Questions... Help a noob :-)...

Hello everyone, and thanks in advance for the help.

I am using Avi2DVD and DVD Decryptor.

I am trying to get my 45 minute .avi files (basically, they're like TV episode length, more or less) onto DVDs. I'd like to watch them on my SDTV CRT flatscreen.

Generally, considering that I've never done this, things seem to be going very well. I am encoding the avis with Avi2DVD and they're successfully burning to DVDs. And, my DVD player is successfully playing the files.

But, there are two "problems".

1. The aspect ratio of the files is 16:9. I indicate 16:9 as the input file, and choose 16:9 for the output file (for the DVD image that I burn). After I've burned the DVD, the aspect ratio is indeed at 16:9, but it won't play properly on my player/TV. It plays in full-screen, but staying in the 16:9 ratio. So, basically, there are no black bars at the top or bottom. The picture is taking up the entirety of the screen, but staying in 16:9 -- meaning that I'm not seeing the sides of the images. Nothing is squished or distorted -- it is just playing in 16:9 full-screen, and I don't get to see the full picture (sides are cut off where my TV ends).

2. I can only fit one 'episode-length file' per DVD. They are only 45 minutes long, so I feel like I should be able to fit more. I choose DVD as the output media (when encrypting), like I am supposed to. Ultimately, these 45 minute files wind up being about 2.5 gigs. This means that I can only fit one file per DVD. I'd like to fit at least two. What are my options?

Hi DLang,

1st are you sure it is not just a setting on your DVD player?

2nd You can run your files threw DVD Shrink prior to burning with decrypter. You can join them together in Shrink.. If you need help with that there are a couple of guides at my site (link in sig) check out the DVD Shrink 101 section :-)

I found a setting on my DVD player to adjust to the 16:9 aspect ratio. Thanks!

Also, thanks so much for DVD Shrink help. Could you perhaps link me to the tutorial that will best help me shrink a series of eps down so that they all perfectly fit on a DVD together, and the package is ready for burning?

Also, I have one more Q.

Encrypting each episode-length thingy with Avi2DVD takes like 2+ hours. This seems excessive. I have a pretty quick computer (3+ghz, gig of RAM, and so on), so I'm not sure why it takes so long. Perhaps a few hours of encoding per episode is normal?

Unfortunatley yes doing video conversion takes a long time and is very strenuous on your PC. You could try using DivXtoDVD it may process a little faster for you :-)
