PS2 HDD + Disc Read error

I'm having a seemingly unique issue with the PS2 HDD and disc read error problem.

I've installed the HDD unit in a friend's PS2 and it works fine, but won't read CD media, remove the PS2 HDD and CD media are again useable.

This is a 3 series PS2 (so it's old) but it works fine without the HD unit on disc reading.... any suggestions?

It does have a modchip in it but I have no clue what make/model it is...

And no, this is meant so my friend can play FFXI with me online =P

so put the hdd in when you want to play ff, and take it out when you are playing a CD based game that wont work. (how many are there anyway)

That's the problem, the PlayOnline Disc is a CD, not DVD, and you have to run the setup off the disc in order to get PlayOnline to work. The FFXI disc is a DVD but is useless without PlayOnline first being installed. See the trend? This would also prevent him from playing any PS1 games too.

Problem is solved for him now tho, he got a series 5 PS2 referb/un-modded.
