i have my htpc setup with a 100' vga cable (75' would have worked, but could not find one)... i wondering if anyone could recommend an amp to use with this legnth of cord?

i tested the run a month ago and managed to ruin my graphics card. the display was working but only at a very low resolution (like 640x480) or something. the higher resolutions would not work even after reverting to original cable. the computer screen would just go blank with any resolution under the lowest setting.

any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

hmm ive never had to use an extenson cable, but what is the quality of youre cable? cause with most good cables(not monster cable) http://www.bettercables.com is an excellent brand, they can even create custom cables for you're needs, like you need a 75' footer. Also, Does youre tv have a resolution resizer(i think wrong term) but with some tv's it will increase the resolution of the incomming picture, and increase it, or resize it. Check thoes settings in you're tv's manual. Make sure your GPU is setup correctly, for vga output to a tv,(im not sure how the settings are in the ATI menus, i have a nvidia card.) well gl.

Radio Shack sells a wireless kit, specifically for this, and it's cheaper than 100' of cable would be!

thanks for the quick replies. actually i already purchased and installed the cable. i am sure that is not high quality since it was only ~$20 or so. I was really interested in using it for a vga display, but am worried since it screwed up one video card already.

I can see getting a bad picture from a long cable but I don't see how it could wreck the video card. It's not like the card knows to work any harder over a longer cable. Unless the cable is wired wrong and is sending feedback over the connections. I wouldn't try the cable again.

Things like the MediaMVP work well for viewing over wireless or over cat5 which is fine up to 100 meters and cheaper.

Yup +1 for using cat5, some recievers have that option, its really worth it. Id look into it if you havent found a solution yet.

i assume u have audio already to tv, or no need, but the way to go is just make u own cable using cat-5E (enhanced) split the 8 into 4 per and use a composite adapter, no loss at that length and simple if u can work a soldering iron

thanks again for the continued advice. i'm still in the darkages without HDTV, however i get closer and closer everday plasma prices drop and bring the field with them!

i am interested in the HDTV over cat5 solution. i have heard that this tends to be a cheaper alternative, but most of my google research keeps ending with expensive HDTV-to-cat5 and cat5-to-HDTV adapters to purchase.

could anyone post a couple links on cheaper/effective solutions? thanks!
