How Do I Boot Backups on Action Replay Max

i own the action replay max edition and when i press start and select start game without cheats i press x and then swap the game with the swap card and nothing happens, it just stays on the "luanching game" screen and nothing happens, i want to see if im doing it wrong before i go and buy Gameshark 2 for the ps2.
