i got a Platinum edition gamecube and had it modded w/ qoob sx and qoob_sx_v1.3a bios. here's the problem. i tried some backup games (burned at 1x on ritek g04 mini dvd-r discs w/ sony DRU-510A dvd-/+RW burner), they worked w/ some DREs randomly, for example, Resident evil, it does load the game, but freezes at the middle of the opening movie, however, i can press start to skip it and no problems whatsoever. BTW, when i use disk check, it fails. is it something wrong w/ the discs or my burner? i didnt do any laser tweak yet. any ideas? what's the recommended value of POT for a Platinum edition gamecube.

my cube: US version NTSC DOL-001B
drive: 2002-08-23
bios: qoob_SX_hw13a

thanks in advance. :)

NEVER burn on 1x for your NGC!

Use DvdInfo to find out the preferred speed for your media/burner!

POT for Ritek G04 on GOOD burner (ie: pioneer dvr108, NEC35xx, TS-L532R, ..., ) about 220+ Ohms.

closer to recommended speed(informed on DVD's surface)- better burns.

i compared the iso with the burned disc on the computer drive, they r absolutely identical, however, when i put the same disc back in my cube, still failed disc check and give me some DREs. does it mean i have to do laser tweak?

Maybe, u can use better media too, may work without tweaking pot.

Ritek mini DVD-R is the best media for gamecube, isnt it?
does it have anything to do with the burning speed? what do u recommend me to do? should i try full size DVD-R first, or get another burner, or measure the pOT value first?

First, burn at recommended speed, to Ritek if u have.
If it does'nt work, tweak the pot, recommended value is around 200-300, you can first try 300, then 290 etc...

hey, i measured my pot and its original value is around 230, i tried to lower its value by 10 until 180, still cant pass disc check, but i can still play the game w/ qoob bios's DRE fix workaround feature on, when i turned DRE fix off, cant even play the game. is that mean i have some probs w/ my burner?

Laser tweak:
POT's value deppents ONLY on:

-burning speed
-media
-burner

It allows the GC drive "to read or not to read" :p the media (POT's value and limits can differ, depending on the 3 reassons described above).

It works with ALL the chips (It has nothing to do with the chip)!

DREs are the effect of the burner, the media and the speed (and the image if it is fu**ed up; wiped or badly fixed) ONLY!!!

BUT if you tweak your laser for the GC drive to read your copy , DOESN'T mean that you have chosen a GOOD:
-burner (like pioneer dvr-108;TOP, nec35xx;GOOD),
-GOOD media (ritekG04; THE ONLY-THE BEST)
-GOOD burning speed (2x usually for minis)!!!

CU later DUDES!

PS: This thread will explain you the technical cause of DREs:

Warning! Don?t adjust your laser to many times or it WILL die!
I lost my laser this way. Also full size DVD-R's will kill your spindle motor as its not designed to accommodate the extra weight of 12cm disks! I lost another 2 cubes this way! The Best Mini DVD-R's are Verbatim 1-4x ver.2.0 or the Ridata 4x disks.

Mario power tennis(ritek mini dvd-r G04 burned at 4x on dvr-109 firmware ver1.57), POT value 232ohms, fails at disc check(no problems playing), any idea? should i lower the pot value? use dvdinfopro for recommended burning speed, it says 4x.

Burn once at 2x and once at 4x the same image.

Then open DvdInfoPro and go to PI/PO (PI/PIF and Jitter media tests) and mesure the two above dvds. The best speed for this media/drive/speed will be revealed ;)

I wanna correct this.
You can adjust your laser as many times you want, pot will only brake when you treat it badly, and it will break when you adjust the pot too low(i know, someone have said he had resistance on pot 0, but i think it wont work anymore, or it was bullshit).

And 12cm disks wond brake spindle motor or anything else(or maybe in 200 years..) That motor is samekind than in Playstation, CD-players, drives..
Those 2 cubes may be broken because of another reason. Parst last longer how well you treat them, unless they have factory defect.
