Very strange Flip-Top problem. Help?

Basically, I started having this problem a few days ago. I backed up a game, and when I tried to play it, it would not load and the PS2 made a very loud, rapid clicking noise. So I tried copying it to my hard drive. Again, clicking noise, HDLoader froze up at 85%. Then I happened to notice that a few of my other (original) games were doing the same thing when I tried to play them. At first I thought my laser lens was messed up, but then I noticed something.....When it was making the clicking noise, if I were to open the flip-top quickly for about a second and close it again, the game would load as normal. So I tried running a game with the flip top open and the little white magnetic disc thing set on top of the disc where it would normally go were the flip top door closed. It worked. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem? I know it's something that can be fixed.....I just don't want to have to keep the flip-top lid open while playing/backing up games.
