alot of new people are taking the advice that burning and or writing at 2x is the only way to go. its not. i have allways burnt games at 4x and never had any probs. after reading that ppl are using 1x.2x. speeds to write i tried it (just for curiosity) and got a few errors, which led me down the wrong paths for alot of solutions. so went back to 4x and good again, however some ppl have probs with 4x and thats fine. but to all the new ones try both and see what works for you. why keep writing at 2x or even 1x when 4x is faster and for me works better. ps some ppl are saying they are having probs with backups after writing at 8x. too fast to make decent backups.
hope this helps

well, you mention that you have problems when trying to back up games at 1 or 2x ... I do too. And like you said, I too get a better result when I back up at faster speed. But, unlike you I usually go for 8x and have hardly ever had any problems with the discs I get from these speeds... I've successfully backed up 70+ games at this speed, and all apart from a few games from EA Games such as LOTR-the third age played flawlessly.
With LOTR 3rd age I lowered the speed to 4x and have a flawless backup of that too... but for the majority of the games I have no problems whatsoever backing up at 8x.
A lot of the difference between a successful backup and a coaster or faulty disc is to do with what the persons computer hardware and software is like that they make the backup with. There is no definitive answer to how a backup should be made.. and you say that 8x is too fast to make decent backups???? I've had no problems even with my god of war rebuild... so just play around with the burn speeds etc if you're having problems, and if you are making backups that work, stick with that method.
I do agree with you though about people that say burning at slowest speed is the way to go.... I took their advice when I first started backing up games and burned so many coasters and faulty discs with slow loading times etc. It was only when I tried burning at higher speeds that I got any backups to work for me at all.
Anyway, as long as this has maybe helped someone then that's ok.

4x all the way. I have also tried burning games at speed below 4x and i have had an increase in defect rate. I have also tried to go above 4x but also had problems.

It is all down to what media you are using and also what burner you have, but as a standard speed, I would highly advice a speed of 4x.

the difference in the quality of the computer and burner between people causes the mix up in the burn speeds that should be used.also the compatibility of the media with the burner and the mod you are using play into this.basically there are alot of reasons why people burn at different speeds and get different results.

This is an interesting observation as I have been having quite a few problems lately with some newer titles like Juiced and FIFA Street. Juiced seems to suffer from slow loading issues and FIFA Street loads unbearably slowly and then the sound stutters, etc once the main menus are reached.

I've tried several different media (Ritek-R, Maxell+R, cheapo stuff too) and either get the same results or worse. But one thing that I have been doing is to consistently burn at 2X or 2.4X.

When I first started making backups, I would just use DVD Decrypter to read and then I always turned around and wrote back at 4X on any kind of media and things seemed to be good to go. I started reading some of the things here and people are always recommending slowest speed like you say so I too started doing it that way.

I think I'll give this another try at 4X and see if that makes a difference. BTW, I have a NEC DVD burner and I believe my PS2 is V4. I was also wondering if it makes sense for people to compare notes on what media works well in their specific version of PS2 and at what speed it was burned.

yeah it makes sense to see what works for other people with different setups and heres a link to a thread that is trying to do so: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/206583

I wanted to post back my results from burning at 4X. I am using a NEC DVD burner and I believe a V4 PS2.

Last night I first had a go at cleaning the lens on the PS2 using a Q-tip / alchohol and then I tried a 4X burned Ritek G05 DVD-R version of Fifa Street.

I'm happy to report it loaded very quickly and ran beautifully!

To then verify that burning at 4X made the difference rather than this being a lens problem, I put the original 2X backup I made on the exact same media of the same title back in the PS2. This resulted in the slow loading and audio skipping problems returning as well!

I also saw some slow downs with Juiced, but not quite as bad as Fifa Street so I am going to try that one next. But I think I now know what speed I will be burning my PS2 backups at from now on!

i always burn 2,4 or 4x for games(dont notice any difference, they all work fine), burning at 1 is just retarded and its from 5 years ago when they only had 1/2x media..lol

Latest test, tried reburning Juiced at 4X and again it works great and seems to have solved all the problems that I had when burning at 2X on the same Ritek media! I'm convinced!

Burning at lower speeds = better quality...burning games at 8x+ will reduce the quality of the pictures of the game...i burnt i think it was fight night round 2 at speed like 6 and the intro video had horrible quality, so i reburnt it at speed 2 and it turned out a lot better.

Personally I have had great success burning at 2x speed with my setup. Recently after hearing others say that 4x works better for backups I tried it. Both speeds are at an even success rate, in fact I have been alternating speeds just to experiment and see if there is a difference. Like it was mentioned earlier, I believe it depends on the hardware and the media you are using. Find out work works and just stick with it.

4x here too. My burner (a Pioneer DVD-R 109) will not burn any lower than 4x. Using 4x I haven't made a single coaster since. Interestingly, I was in a rush when I did a back up of Juiced and forgot to change to write speed which was set 8x. Anyway, Juiced was burnt at 8x and I didn't have a problem playing the game whatsoever (I used Ritek GO4 by the way).
