the swap magic cd rom driver is used for ps2 cd games and also alot of homebrew stuff like snes-station. ps2 cd-roms are blue discs.

At first I was confused by the cd rom driver also because there aren't very many actual ps2 blue discs.

No just 1 swap Game shark or breaker pro is the boot disc in the case of a ps1 backup. The swap magic CD driver is for PS2 CDs not PS1 CDs. I know it sounds confusing but look at it like this
PS1 Game Shark or Breaker pro = boot= PS1 Backup
Swap Magic CD =boot= PS2 CD Backup
Swap Magic DVD = boot = PS2 DVD Backup

The only problem with gameshark and action replay is that newer versions don't stop spinning the disc so you can swap. Of course you could still do it ,if you feel comfortable pulling a spinning disc off of the spindle. I've done it on my 1st PS2 and it worked but only sometimes. I'm sure it's damaging to the console too, so I don't advise it.

It will probably work then. I have Breaker Pro, and it worked really good on my slim PS2 but my old version 7 PS2 dosen't want to read it except for about evert 1 in 20 times, it usually just makes a lot of clicking noises. Anyway I ordered PS1 GameShark Lite off of ebay for like $7 ,and it works with no prob.

hey all. I found this thread while looking for a way to boot my ps1 backups with SwapMagic 3.6
Thank you for confirming that SwapMagic isn't for ps1 backups. That saved me a lot of frustration.
I was able to find a way to boot my backups without the use of any third-party swap disc. You just take a normal ps1 game, load it, and when it does the "screen flash" right before the ps1 logo, swap the disc with your backup. It requires a swap while the disc is spinning, but it can be done quickly if you practice.
Anyway, I was able to load all of my backups, as well as It Might Be NES using this method. I'll probably still buy Breaker Pro to eliminite the disc-spinning problem, but for now I'm satisfied.
