I use DVDShrink exclusively to rip out episodics so they can be backed up with Nero without compression. No problem for literally thousands of episodes of this and that...until now.
"Dead Like Me," second season, released just yesterday, defies Shrink, however - all episodes of all three of the first three disks. Disk four transferred ok, oddly enough.
I even downloaded and loaded up the latest version of "AnyDVD" to run in the background. No change.
Still get a bland Shrink error of: "DVD Shrink encountered and error and cannot continue the operation....no error....The reason is: The parameter is incorrect."
I've seen this a time or two on a couple of other recently-released episodics, but it affected only one to three episodes out of a season, so I simply skipped over them.
Error always occurs right at the end of the process.
Decrypter yields up errors immediately. DVDFab won't touch it. Haven't found anything current that works on ripping this new form of episodic copy protection. Anybody got any ideas?

If the episodes you have recorded are off of HBO or any of the other pay per view chanels the movies now are all protected with Macrovision. The only way to get rid of Macrovision that I have found is to eliminate it before the episode gets recorded to your computer...and to do that you would have to use a video stabilizer... such as the GoDVD by Sima...Who by the way are now being sued by Macrovision....

Trust me. I tried DVD Decrypter (my main program)...along with about everything else that is available. Decrypter fails with a "Logical Block Address out of Range" error message.
I used ver 2.9.1.0 of DVD Fab Decryptor - I checked for an update, tho the program is set to check automatically anyway. Said ver 2.9.exe, just like the one I've got. Downloaded it anyway and found it is now up to 2.9.2.3. Odd that they give it same name for distribution, probably to minimize the downloads until they deem the upgrade to be sufficiently interesting. Tried it and it failed, too, with the same error: "Get DVD information fail. 4096"
Downloaded trial version of Fab Express, too, with precisely the same error message.
Tried both with and without AnyDVD 5.3.2.1 running in the background. Tried Decryptor and Shrink with and without AnyDVD running. Tried others. With and without. All failed. Tried something called 43free or something - very unruly program - which I ripped out and stomped into the dust after it failed.
It's something new, I tell ya. Something new. Is somebody on this yet?

About macrovision - while DVDShrink doesn't remove Macrovision (it's only an issue if you want to copy your dvd to tape someday and why would you?), Decrypter and most others do. It's not the issue.

And...these are not off-air recordings. As I said in my first post, it is the Season 2 DVD set released by MGM just yesterday....

"This release?" Check the label. I'll give odds that you are speaking of Season 1, not Season 2. If not, then you have gotten your hands on some new, supersecret release of Shrink and the originator is gonna lose his new job.
I now have tested Season 2 of "Dead Like Me" on three different machines with old and new versions of all the programs I previously listed. Always, the same error on every single episode on disks 1 through 3 (disk 4 still copies just fine). All other new releases back up just fine.

I had the same problem with the "dead like me season 2" dvds, the first 3 discs always came "reading error", the 4th disc transferred ok. i used exclusively my DVD-RW drive.
i have clone dvd and any dvd working.
the problem was over when i used my second dvd drive , it occurred no reading error with the new dvd-drive and alle 4 "dead like me" dvd´s copyied smoothly.
so finally i think it is no new copy-protection , rather a form of false or bad dvd-drive reading. my DVD-RW drive is very new, bought it 1 month ago, the DVD-R drive is the same age, but runs smoother and faster than the DVD-RW.
i hope it will help you

I'm a little late on this one, but I had the same trouble. Couldn't rip it with anything on my Lite-On SOHD 16P9S, but it worked with DVD Shrink and AnyDVD running in the background when I ripped it with my Pioneer DVR-109 (rips slower, but it worked). Odd.

I did this and did not have a prob. Make sure dvd decrytor is set to brute force and all the other nice settings according to scuba pete's site. The only thing I can say is maybe you have a lousy drive with a bad buffer. Or you have too much clutter on your hardrive which I have seen in different posts can cause troubles. So try a clean install.
Last I can say even know a few had conflicts....is run anydvd (newest version) in the background and use dvd decryptor to rip it. Some in the posts say they have conflicts with that, but I never do....at least not yet.
BTW...Im using a hp oem dvd...cd rw drive that I flashed to philips firmware...cause its really a rebadged philips drive. With the hp firmware in there I couldnt rip barely nothing or write most discs. But now I have firmware from philips..it burns and writes fine. So it also can be a issue with out of date firmware or just crapy firmware like hp.
Hope this helps...

Yep. This clearly is a drive or drive firmware problem. I tried the DVD reader in my notebook and it worked just fine, using DVDShrink. Newer drive, from HP, interestingly enough. Wonder if there is something being used in the drives now on the market that addresses this issue - might be coincidence, but it seems to be limited to older (1 yr +) drives. My Sony DRU 500As are flashed with the most current firmware out there, too, but they just don't work on several episodics these days.

Well what you could do is punch up decryptor. Go under the tools,...then drive option and click firmware updates. It will take you to a site to see if you really have the latest firmware version. It may also list a region free firmware. From what I seen...sometimes using the region free firmware might fix sonys crappy firmware.

Nope. It's not the pressings. I get this error message pretty regularly, usually with just one or two out of an episodic set. Today, I got it with Disk 4 of Simpson's Season 6. I got it previously with several Homicide disks and with many others. My laptop DVD reader buzzed right through the Simpson disk with Shrink, no problem, however.

I had absolutely no problems with "Dead Like Me," Season 2, all disks, reading them with my NEC 3500 and 3520 drives. I did, however, run into read problems with the NEC 2510. My very old TEAC (DV-W50E) drive which is a 4X DVD-R (only) drive, will read darn near any DVD disk, no matter what type of protection it has. It's my fallback (read only) drive when all else fails.
I've been preaching the mantra of having more than One Drive for disk reading, for a long time. There are some disks that just flat give certain drives "Read FITS" even if the disks are "Perfect Pressings" in all ways. For that contingency, I have 5 drives. 4 Internal and One (The old TEAC) external. I have had as many as 4 drives flat refuse to read a disk, but NEVER had all 4 of them fail. The old TEAC is my last resort, fall back, reader.
It's a good idea to have at least two DVD drives available for disk reading. Preferable, drives made by different manufacturers. When one fails to read a disk, odds are in your favor that the other one will.
It's also better to rip the entire DVD disk content to your Hard Drive in File Mode before working with Shrink. You will run into far fewer errors due to drive (read) problems that way.

I usually take my drives apart and Direct Clean the laser lenses every two or three months. I have found that disk type (brush cleaners) are fairly useless for anything other than removing minor dust particles, and that compressed air just moves things around inside the drive case for a short time.
Grease, smoke and other airborne pollutants take direct contact with an Alcohol Solvent and Photographic Lens Cleaning Brush to properly remove. Also the lens mirror needs a cleaning now and then, and direct access is the ONLY way to get to that little bugger.
As for my 4 Drives getting hot, they are in Two Different Computers, and I run enough fans to keep them all well within normal operating temperature. Most of the time I don't even install the case covers on my computers. They are both home built, and I like easy access.
DVD Shrink is a fantastic program, but NOT for ripping protected disks. You will get 100 percent better results with the program if you ask DVD Shrink to work with an unprotected (pre-ripped) VIDEO_TS file folder from the Hard Drive rather than asking it to work directly with a disk. Rip with Decrypter or AnyDVD and THEN use Shrink. You will seldom go wrong.

i haven't tried AnyDVD yet... but i used icopydvds 2 cuz i don't have the problem of playing the same dvd over and over again.. like then say burn dvds r sensitive to be played over n over again, and as well as minor scrathes with definitely make it non playable... it also shrinks any rentals that i burn... i think a rental dvd consists of 9gs or maybe mbbites and it compresses it... so if i were to use Nero to make a second copy it fits right in 120min DVD-R once again.... DVD Shrink works well but it juss gives me lots of errors .. and bs... it also slows down my computer....so i gave that up... and stopped putting movies in my hard drive....
