Does anyone know if it's possible to add subtitles from an SRT file to a DVD? I have on my hard drive the BUPs, IFOs and VOBs of a film without English subtitles (and with all extras and menus removed). I have the SRT file separately. I know I could convert the DVD to an AVI, then re-convert to DVD, incorporating the subtitles in the process. But is there a way of doing it more directly?

Hi there...

It's possible... you need to use an authoring tool such as DVDLab Pro.

You can import your VOB files (allow DVDLab Pro to Demux them) and then add to the audio and video stream your subtitles.

I think rebootjim has written quite a good guide of DVDLab Pro which you can find in the Guides section in this website, IIRC...

Cheers

It worked a treat, thanks! The only (slight) problem was that it wrote the "sub"titles just about mid-screen rather than at the bottom. I didn't see anything along the way that allowed them to be adjusted, but maybe I didn't look hard enough. At any rate, since the lettering is fairly thin and spidery, it's not too obtrusive. I appreciate your help, mate.

have you checked page 37 of the manual?
Quote:
Subtitle position and Emphasis.
While the font and style apply to all rows, each row in the subtitle window can have few unique properties. To change subtitle
properties click on the small button, near the bitmap open.
This opens the Advanced properties for that particular row.
Here you can set position of the subtitle. Subtitles are by default displayed on bottom center. Clicking on Apply to all Subtitles
will apply this setting to all subtitles in the grid table.
A Subtitle Emphasis is other way how to further adjust each subtitle. For example, it is often used in dialogue with somebody
off−screen, the first line, in italics, would be spoken by someone out of shot, whilst the second, in normal style, by someone in the
shot

Page 37! No, I hadn't checked it. I always try to fly by the seat of my pants, especially because what I'm after is the film, not the technical knowledge. But the knowledge is good to have, too, and I really appreciate the generosity of people, like you, who take the trouble to be helpful to people, like me, who are lazy bastards. The film (Lilja 4-ever, by Lukas Moodysson) has to be my top film now, I think, surpassing even two or three tops directed by Andrei Tarkovsky (Andrei Rublev, Dersu Uzala and The Sacrifice), so I think, instead of putting up with the really good DVD I now have, I should follow your advice and go for the perfect one. I appreciate your input, mate. Thanks, much.
