I am looking at building my own computer and i was wondering if there is a real difference between serial ATA hard drives and a standard IDE hard drive. i noticed serial ATA is more expensive.

Serial ATA connections use a different kind of power plug, and a different cable. A SATA cable is thin and small, unlike standard IDE gray ribbon cables. Also, SATA has a much higher bandwidth for sending and receiving data, and can be hot-swapped in a computer while it is running (SATA 2 only, IIRC).

You can build very large RAID arrays with SATA as well, as certain motherboards and controller cards allow you to plug in 8 or more drives in an array.
