+R -R which one is good for rec. DVDs for backup

I know there is not much differance between -R +R but which is best for making copying DVD movies for BKup.

i use -R but both are nearly the same you can booktype +R to dvdrom like -R if your burnr doe this and software

The stand alone players are the ones that are going to tell you what they prefer. Some of them can be picky as to which format they will play off of certain burners.Many variations between all the different burners and stand alone players. You'll have to try some of both formats to and let your player/s decide.If they don't like it,they will give you a "No Disc Inserted" type of error.
My benq 1620's have no trouble with either format for my viewing pleasures,but I do have trouble playing my dash backups in a few of my family and friends players.
I book-type my plus media to dvd-rom and the compatability on the stand alones and pc drives if very good. Only 1 old ps2 that will not play any of my backups out of 30+ drives!

What I plan to get is the BenQ 1640 and I have a toshiba dvd player that form what I've read will only accpet -R discs.

Make sure though too just because no one has brought it up yet, that you get yourself some good media too so you can assure flawless playback in your dvd player. Most people say to stay away from Memorex branded media. I recommend Verbatim or Taoyo Yuden disks in either format. They are the best media and recommended by most of the community here.

Changing the booktype field

However, there is no limit for writing the booktype field. Therefor a DVD+R(W) recorder will be able to modify this field by sending a command to the DVD recorder and fool the DVD player.
When the booktype field (bitsetting) is changed to DVD-ROM then DVD players are fooled and will think the user has put in a DVD-ROM disc instead of a DVD+R disc and will read it accordingly. This results in an increased chance that the player is able to read the disc and that?s why the ability to change the booktype field (bitsetting) is essential to a lot of users. Certainly owners of a DVD player that requires this field to be set to DVD-ROM, in order to work properly, will prefer a DVD recorder that supports setting the booktype field.

All DVD players will play ROM that is the format used by the industries in other words original store bought DVD movies are ROM.

AndreL, Yes it should take dvd-rom also.I have run into a problem of reading my booktyped dvd-roms from an I/O magic 16x,built by EMPA.The compatability of that burner totally sucked,but the dash format performed better.
I haven't heard much about the benq1640,but it should be a very good burner.It should have excellent compatability on many different stand alones.

I have 5 pc burners and 1 stand alone tv recorder and I know all of them are different,except both my benq 1620s. My players error out with a "no disc inserted" error on the formats of some of these burners.My benq's,no problem. That I/O sucked-dash prefered.HP 640c wasn't bad-but still not up there in the compatabity department as my benq's.My khypermedia +8x-ok-a few compatability issues as well.
All of these lasers are different,and some stand alone players can kick them out,especially those pesky ones.
Sounds like you haven't gotten that benq 1640 yet,but when you do:
Try a small batch of 10 or 25 pack of quality media from each format.Media quality is critical.Those so called Pesky standalones can a pain in the a**.Media quality is the #1 issue here.Plus or dash,it's not a very big difference,but you want the right format that you play those backps on.Every burner is different and you'll have to find the right format that suits your needs.
Depending on which programs you get,then you can try the booktyping feature of that benq with the plus format.

I just read about DVD-RAM and it has kinda confused me with the DVD-ROM,
This is what I've got down so far. DVD-Rom is a format that comes from +R DVDs. That is most compatible with most stand alone DVD players
Now can anyone tell me something else about DVD-ROM
Now with DVD-RAM I have now idea what that is beside it being an media type. But I looked it up on Wikiopedia and they say this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-RAM. But I don't understand that too much either. So if some one would be so kind as to explain it to me. I know wikiopedia does that but I think I need moor back ground info on DVD-RAM.

DVD RAM is only used for backing up data. In other words you don't want to back up your movies on DVD RAM because 99.9% of the players out there wont play them..

Booktyping +r/rw media just makes them more compatable (most compatable actually). Dvd-rom doesn't come from +r/rw media. The booktype field has to be changed to dvd-rom. I think you can even change the booktype field on dvd+r/rw media to read as DVD-R (I've never done this but think I saw somewhere where it can be done. If anybody knows otherwise please feel free to correct me. bbmayo?).

I never heard or the DVD+RW being able to made as DVD-R, but I would imagine it could be possible seeing how you could write what ever you want in the Lead-in area of a DVD+ disk. So I would guess it is possible just not really sure why you would want to do that though?
