Make an AVI file Smaller ?

Hey ppl....
I recently ripped a dvd and made it into an AVI file.

The problem is that its nearly 3 gigs in size.

Is there any easy way (or program I can use)to reduce the size of the AVI file ?

I've heard of ppl using Adobe Premier, but I dont have a copy of it.

The articles section on this site describes how to convert the DVD to Divx AVI files small enough to fit on CDs.

Yes, use the DivX guide on this site for a very crisp result.
What program did you use to create this monster of a file???
