Lets assume someone will be using DVDDecrypter ISO read and ISO write on dual-layer media, and dvdxcopy on single-layer media.

Which burner and media combo works best for these?

Hi again Dragon,

I would recommend any good dvdrw capable of bitsetting especially for the DL media because they have more compatability problems with stand-alone dvd players. Plextor is the caddy and most expensive but I really like BenQ's. I have also read good things about the LG's and Lite-on SOHW-1693S.

All I will say for media is verbatum DVD+R DL and DVD5 followed by taiyo yuden dvd5's.

Yes, it is a rebadged Lite-on, probably SOHW-1693S with sony f/w.

Thanks, mort. just out of curiousity, how do you know it is a rebadged lite-on?

I bought the DRU-800A, found the bitsetting function, set it to "dvd-rom", and am burning right now, will post the log afterwards, along with whether it is a success or not.

I guess it's just kinda common knowledge. I learned about sony's being rebadged liteys from another forum. I have a litey and the sony's are in the same sub forum. You can actually crossflash some sony's with lite-on f/w, not that you will need to. It also tells you here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2074 that it is an oem lite-on drive.

BTW you're welcome and I hope everything works out for you. I'll feel really bad if your new drive doesn't perform but I bet it will. It's got to be better than an emprex. If you have any questions or need any help I have a couple buddy's here on AD that have sony drives and love em and can probably assist you in any way.

It works. OMFG it works, and its beautiful. Now I can burn single-layer and dual-layer as I need to, without worrying about image-loss from compression.

Sony DRU-800A Dual Layer DVD Burner (Which according to Mort is actually a Lite-on).

Verbatim DVD+R DL

DVDDecrypter iso read and iso write.

Verified, works in both computer and standalone dvd players.

thank you all for the assistance, if I run into any further issues or have information that can help ya'll, I will drop it off.

Cool, very happy to hear. I noticed that your f/w is outdated but as long as it's working I wouldn't worry about it. Yours is KY01 and the current is KY03. In the future you may need to flash it with the updated f/w if you come across some media it doesn't like.

:) were you implying me mr. mort? hehehe..yah, im one of the very few people that actually LIKE the sonys~ :) yes, it's a rebadged liteon, but i still continue to use sony's firmware...while i don't have the newest one that dragoon79 has dru-800a, i have 2 models down, the dru-710a...well over a year and NO problems~ burning a dvd right now as i type HAHAHAHA...

so many people despise Sony made drives...i've helped a LOT of people get to the bottom of it...usually a RMA solves most of their burner issues, they just happend to get a "faulty drive" or a "bad batch".

good to hear things are working good for you dragoon79...welcome and mort81 is one of my most knowledgeable buddies here on AD whenever I run into problems :) he definitely KNOWS his stuff~ :)

Just noticed something else. I stated earlier that the sony DRU-800 was probably a rebadged lite-on SOHW-1693S, well just verified that to be correct. http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html I've read good things about this drive.

i'm so behind in drives now..hehe, can't keep up w/ all these newer, faster, updated drives..my newest one i currently own is the pioneer dvr-109~ and even that is pretty old to me :)

i think i'm going to get a Plextor next...don't know when, but, next on my list.

TY + Pioneer = fast, clean backups, as good as it can get.

TY + my Sony 710a= a little slower, but the backups are flawless.

Verbatim 8x DVD+R MCC003s on either drive = bread and butter.

I just bought the SONY DRU-800A DVD burner yesterday. Could you guys tell me which single layer dvd (DVD5, 4.3 GB) works best/good (brand and model number) with this burner? And is it better to use dvd-r or dvd+r disks? For those of you who have this burner do you find it good (with high successful dvd burn rate) and worth buying and keeping? Also I have a Pentium 3 733 MHz PC with 256 MB of RAM, can my PC burn dvds successfully (the burner's box says the minimum requirement is a Pentium 800 MHz PC and 1.6 GHz recommended). Thanks.

Vic99, Taiyo yuden and verbatim data life plus should be ok in that burner. Beware of prodiscs, store brand name media like staples/bestbuy/memorex/-they use a lot of cmags.

Which format? Hard telling. Standalone players will tell you which format to use. Some will give you a "no disc inserted" type of error when you place your backup disc in them. Best to try both formats and judge for yourself.

You are on the lower end of the specs, but should be ok. I've got my backup celeron p3- 598 mhz,xp-sp1,and 256 mbs of ram. It's very good on the small DVD-5 dvd's,but the larger the dvd-the longer it takes. It really shows on those 8 gig dvd-9's when you compress them into 4.38 gigs.An extra 30 gig hd helps. This pc does a hell of a job,but takes longer.

The main thing, How much free hard drive space do you have?
8-12 gigs is recommended, depending on which programs you use to rip it.

To add to what saugmon said, that drive is a rebadged lite-on SOHW-1693S and is capable of booktyping dvd+r/rw media to dvd-rom (most compatable format for stand-alone dvd players) therefor I would recommend +r media.

I have about 300 MB left on my hard drive. I can free up an additional 1 to 2 GB by deleting some junk. I could free up about 10 GB more by backing up some of the data on my hard drive. So will this DVD burner work on my system with small free HDD space (300 MB) and low end of CPU spec (Pentium 3 733 MHz)? I mainly want to backup my PS2 games (with DVD Decryptor), some movie dvds and some data files on DVD-5 (4.7 GB) discs. What is a good software to use to backup movie dvd? Does this DVD burner (SONY DRU-800A) works well on DVD-9 (8.5 GB) backup too? Is DVD+R still the best to backup PS2 games (I have a v7 PS2)? And is SONY DRU-800A dvd burner capable of booktyping DVD+R disc to DVD-ROM and how do I do that? Thanks.

vic99,

I can't answer all your questions since I don't own that drive. You are going to need more free space on your hdd. 10-15 gb is recommended. Your cpu will work but it will be slow. I recommend adding another stick of 256 memory minimum. That drive should work well for making backups to DVD9 and DVD5 media as long as you use good, high quality media. Verbatum and taiyo yuden are the most highly recommended but sony, fuji (made in japan), and maxell are usually good choices too. Here are two free programs that work well for making backups and they are FREE, DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. Click on the programs in blue letters to get to the download page or use the software tab at the top of the forum. Here are some guides. http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/index.html Regarding booktyping to dvd-rom, what burning software are you going to be useing? Since your drive is a rebadged litey the lite-on booktype utility should work too. Here's the link and there is a user guide there too. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441
