I want to start off by saying I hate it when people say, "What's the best media for this, what's the best media for that?" I have read hundreds of these, and have narrowed it down to 2 brands. Taiyo Yuden, and Verbatim. I need the media to be DVD-R Single Layer, 4.7GB(standard), etc. Pretty much just a standard DVD-R. Will be used for burning PS2 backups, so they need to be excellent quality. Cost is a big problem here, as well as fake media. I have heard many many times that people shell out all this money for TY discs, only to end up with 100% coasters because they are fake. This scares me away from TY a little bit, as I wouldn't know how to handle the problem. Verbatims are supposed to be nearly flawless, but what is a reasonable price? I am looking for them in a 30 or 50 pack spindle and come up with a broad range of titles and prices. I actually saw a spinde of 20 Verbatims for over 200$!!!

Also...thought I would add that I found these Verbatims at Best Buy for real cheap. Any comments as to the quality of them??

i know you've said you narrowed it down to 2 brands, and thats great. but just so you know, i've burned 100's of PS2 games and found that there is no "best media". you gotta use whatever works for you. I got games on crap discs that are completely fine, and i've got $5 coasters. you do what you want, but i say experiment a little and se what works for ya, it might save you alot of time and money in the long run. until then you can try dealnews.com and search for the discs you want and find a good price. good luck

@razor,

regarding that bestbuy link you put up...check out some of the responses in this thread...there ARE a few problems that some are experiencing...

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/213588

i use only 16x DVD+R media for Verbatims...made in taiwan...MCC004 coding and so far, for me, they are EXCELLENT, not a single bad burn...i personally burn them @8x...you could go lower to 4x if you want the satisfaction of knowing that slower burns are less prone to errors...but, i'm just letting you know how fast I burn mine.

lately, i've found that many of the DVD-R format 16x in both TY and Verbatims have been "dodgy"...i personally find the 8x DVD-R more consistent quality, that again, is just personal opinion. :)

good luck w/ your buying decision...weigh all the factors for your OWN setup and try out a few different kinds of media as darthnip suggested...you could read and read until your eyes pop out, but the bottom line is...USE what WORKS for YOU and YOUR setup~ :)

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

I understand, as this is what I have read on here....However, I have been using Memorex 8x DVD-R, and they work great for DVD videos, except for the fact that I can NEVER (not for a single second) get more than 1x out of them. I think it may be a firmware issue, so I am a little leniant on that problem. However, I use the same media for a PS2 game and I have all sorts of problems. Since it only burns at 1x, the loading times are horrible. It takes an hour just to burn one disc! Also, the game will be reading the music just fine, and it will become choppy and distorted. Same with the video, all except for 2 games. I have burned 2 flawless, 1 coaster, 1 that freezes about 5 minutes into it (another coaster??) and 5 that have such bad loading times the games cannot play the FMV's. I need more than a 22% success rate. I understand that I can't really go wrong with Taiyo Yuden, but I have not found out yet what is a decent price. I also haven't found what is a decent price for Verbatim. I need them in a spindle, 25 or 50 (or 30, anywhere in between) DVD-R. I have now narrowed it down to 8x Verbatim made in Taiwan only; if I do not end up getting Taiyo Yuden.

Also, will be getting one of those 16x Verb spindles for $10 to test and see. Is this advised against??Some people had probs, some people didn't, correct?

Thanks, Razor

yes, some people had problems, others have not...

well, generally speaking...a GOOD price for high quality media is around the $0.40/per disc range...with sales and such, sometimes lower, but a ballpark figure would be about that...

whether u get the TYs or the Verbatims...regardless of the denomination...25pk/30pk..50pk...etc...do the quick math IF it's around $0.35-$0.40/per disc, you are pretty good~ :)

i have NO experience in burning games...as i do not own any of the new video game consoles...but, being able to ONLY burn @1x is not acceptable to me...the quality of the media is the factor in that one...i would STRONGLY suggest you ditching the memorex as it seems your percentage rate of success is VERY LOW on those...totally NOT acceptable. good luck

Thanks...the 35 to 40 cent each price range seems more doable than I thought it would be. I remember when media used to be really really expensive because it was new...Oh, well, times change...

Thanks!!! You really helped! Razor

OK...I have got my media, they are Verbatim 8x, I hear from a lot of people here at AD that supermediastore is good, correct?? I ended up paying $56.52 shipped, meaning $0.57 a disc, so it's not so good of a price, but I sent in a rebate, so the final price should be $0.32 a disc, so I ended up with a 100-pack spindle for $31.52.

I know what you're thinking by now, what is the point of this post?? I pretty much just need to know if supermediastore is as good as I have read, or if I need to check the quality of the discs.

I would like to reiterate something from a previous post...

"...the final price should be..."

I am going to have a tough time ever buying from Verbatim again, as they were very untruthful. I had sent in my rebate with all the required paper work, and I have been waiting for a reply. I get a reply and it says I didn't purchase during the date it was effective. Not only that, but they sent me this reply on a postcard with none of my documentation. I called them to ask them why they didn't give me the rebate as I DID make the purchase in the time, and they did not have the documentation at all.

Is it just me, or does someone else see a big flaw in this whole buy our product and we'll give you some money back scheme. You see, in order to get this 'rebate', you have to cut the UPC off and send it to them. Well, in order to cut off the UPC, you have to open the package. WTF Verbatim! I thought you were cool! I should of bought TY, they would of been cheaper besides your damn 'rebate'!

well, personally for me, i no longer buy anything with rebates involved, that is ONLY ME, i have been scammed too many times in the past with NEVER receiving my rebates (whether they say it was "lost in the mail" or whatnot) i ended up paying retail price for all those "mail-in rebate" items.

so, that is just PERSONAL experience, others have been much luckier with getting rebates quickly and in full; i on the other hand, don't have that kind of luck.

i am sorry to hear about your unfortunate rebate experience, it has happened to me MANY MANY times before...i wouldn't discredit Verbatim as a company as they DO IN FACT make a quality product, it's just that their "rebate-fulfillment center" or whoever they hired to manage their mail-in-rebates is not up to par.

while i would agree that going with Taiyo Yuden from supermediastore is a very good bet and they have never sent me fakes before; i look for Verbatim when they have those "can't possibly pass up sales" with NO REBATES involved.

just use your best judgement on good quality media, you will have these hurdles along the way, but, keep at it, we all learn from experience...good luck. :)
