I have a couple of questions that I have researched throughout all of the forums that I would expect to have similar contents. I have recently just rebuilt my intire configuration for Rips. I was using Srink as my primary with DVDDecrypter as my backup if DVDSHRINK didn't work with an old version of NERO as my burn software. I was having alot of problems with getting some good copies on several new movies (Hitch, Hostage, Assault on Precinct 13) I started only using the software to make backups of my daughters Disney and Pixar movies and then well I leave the rest for your imagination. I had the hot setup and then all hell broke loose. I would try to watch the copies and they would just freeze in the disc menu. I couldn't get past the menu or even if I tried to use the scene selection options the same would happen. I was at a ratio of 1/3. I did alot of homework lately and as mentioned above I reconfigured. I am using ANYDVD in the background to pull all the junk out along w/SHRINK or Decrypter if nesc.
1)Can an already compressed movie be run through ANYDVD? I can't find a way to rerun one. (I am sure this is a most likely a dumb, but easy question)
2)What exactly is the need to run ANYDVD along w/SHRINK?
3)For media I have using a 50pk of Phillips (CMC MAG. AE1) DVD-R's. I am through my second pack and just have had problems with about 5-6 and these where attempting (Hitch, Hostage, and Precinct 13).
By the way I am sure this one might reset the bar for either the longest or perhaps maybe the most nonsense everone has read. Although I am still green and I have read through some seriously rough ones. So thanks for all your support.

Quote: Can an already compressed movie be run through ANYDVD
No that is not what the program is for. If you are trying to backup your backup then just use DVDD in iso read then right mode. The disk is already the right size and is no longer protected.
Quote: What exactly is the need to run ANYDVD along w/SHRINK?
AnyDVD just breaks encryption/protection on a DVD, it does nothing else. It enable Shrink to see the movie as non-protected. If you had not been using AnyDVD you probably would not be able to handle any of the movies you stated using Shrink, it has difficulties with newer movies. You would be much better off using DVDD and ripping to your hard drive and then using Shrink. DVDD is a much better ripper.

Not exactly the best of choices in media, CMC Mag can cause problems in burning and playback. You may want to try better quality such as Verbatim, Sony, Fuji or Taiyo Yuden.
What is the make and model of your burner and is the firmware on it up to date. Firmware will help the burner in recognizing media.
Also what speed are you burning at, keep it to 4x and you will have less chance of errors, which can cause skipping/freezing and pixellation.
Set your target to 4300 in Shrink, with cheap media it is not wise to burn too close to the edge.

Arniebear by the way I used the info you gave with setting the Target @4300, but the firmware info I am not clear on so I did some research. I came up with possible updates, but I have no idea on how to attempt the process and it really seems like some serious stuff. I somewhat attempted the idea until I received a warning of critical failure to my drive. So I decided if I didn't know what I was doing it wasn't a real good idea to be brave. Do you have any ideas?
Also I found a detailed manual on one of the forums listed by ReZips on the correct steps for using DVDD and then Shrink to burn. I followed the steps to a "T" and received an just as DVDD started to burn. I can post the log if you can look at it and give me some pointers it would extremely helpful. I am extremely discouraged with the situation, because prior I used Shrink only had about an 80% success rate.

Your burner firmware is dependant on whether you have a true lite-on burner or an OEM drive. Go into Decrypter, then the tools tab, then drive and the capabilities and it will show you what your current version is and you can post that. Since you are running a laptop computer, my advice is to buy a cool pad for underneath you may be having problems with overheating, this can cause burning problems. Also, close down any running programs in the back, and free up as much memory as possible, Shrink takes 100% of CPU power, what are your comp specs how much ram do you have?

Hey thanks for the reply and all your help!
I did what you said and checked the capabilities of the drive, but it will not allow me to copy the info so I can post it. So I went under the drive properties and still couldn't find what I needed. Although I did change the burn speed to 4x. It was set to fastest speed. The drive is a slimtype DVDRW SOSW-852S and the driver verision is 5.1.2535.0. I tried updating the driver through the Wizard and no luck. I also checked out the CDFreaks info and it came up as true lite-on burner. I found the firmware updates, but I have no idea on how to use them and I truely don't want to screw things up anymore than they already may be.
I also did a complete unistall of Nero 6.6.0.15a and then a complete re-install and then a defrag along with a reboot a couple of times. I tried to give it another try. Well I received the same error as yesterday just as DVDD starts the burn. It happens immediately, but everything else goes just fine. I did notice that during the process where you choose to use DVDD to burn I could choose to Nero instead. Any ideas or I am I domed?

I forgot to say that during the process nothing is running except the applicable program and as for the heat issue I will suspend the unit to keep the air moving underneath (By the way good idea I never thought about this issue)

@wildrice just PM'd me to have a look at this thread (i'd been assisting on another thread) - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/214104
- then i recognised the thread, i'd got stuck on that one so far. We'd got as far as checking the firmware and this was where i got to -
Quote: Destination Device: [1:0:0] Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-852S PSD1 - i homed in on the firmware before i looked down the log and saw the CMC media (shudders), or the other guys' replies. Anyway, after finding some info on the possible firmware versions, i gave up trying to figure it out -
LiteOn SOSW-852S
? P9S2 - stock (2004/06/24) (no +R DL)
? PS01 - stock (2004/06/28)

? 6S07 - stock (2004/10/21) (6x max.)

? PFS1/PFS2/PFS3 - stock (2005/05/27) (Vaio OEM) (newer than PDS7)
- i certainly wouldn't even even bother trying to figure out which one might be the newest. stick to the other guys' suggestions re getting better media, and avoid that CMC stuff like the plague..
.....come on guys, help me out - this one's a pig :)

there's no pattern in the naming convention in the firmware choices that i can see, other than they don't make sense :)
