I am in the process of building a whole new computer. I want to install my windows XP on it but unfortunately it is a upgrade version. I heard there is a way to fool your computer into thinking there is a full blown OS already in the system without actually having one so all you have to do is slip in the upgrade windows XP disc and it will install. Does anyone have this INFO? If not I will have to start with windows 95 and work my way up and that is not reccommended for the new system. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

you will need to have a actual copy of windows 98 or windows 2000 disk. when you install it will asked for the disk. it will then read the disk and than install window xp.

You could always clone your existing hard drive to the new hard drive you purchased and put the new one in your built PC. Another option would be to use your older drive but I'm sure if you're building a PC you kinda want things to be "new".

Partition Magic is a good program to accomplish your clone. They are both pay programs but the trial the offer won't expire before you get a chance to do what you need to do.

If you're talking about the Indian that cracked Microsoft's OS then here are some links on how to do that:

http://lists.grok.org.uk/pipermail/full-disclosure/2005-May/03424...
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en

If you do try this then remember every step has to be followed exactly, no mistakes or else this won't work.

I tried that little trick, no joy! I noticed that on the update site you can bypass the validation bunkum by just turning on your automatic updates.
Works a treat!

I didn't have any OS to try it on but I heard that it's hard to work through.
