Problem when joining two avi files..help!!

i used virtualdub (modded and unmodded versions) to "append avi segment", saved it as avi with direct stream copy and when i play back the joined video, in precisely where one avi ends and the 2nd starts there's a sord of brief screeching "spike" noise in the audio and the audio goes very silent for about 3 minutes..iev tried using x video converter and it does the same thing!!! wat's up with this? has this problem occured to anybody else?
