Playing backups on your ps2 should be just like normal wear and tear. Usually members suggest getting a cheapo $25-$35 player to play their backups on,saving the ps2 on that wear and tear on the laser.

That is a difficult question. Those ps2's seem be a lot more trickier at playing dvd backups than regular stand alones.Some like the plus,some the dash,and some will play anything you slap in them. I play mine on about 5 different ps2's using the plus format, one of them had trouble with ricohjpn-01 media.Another buddy had a v1 or v2 ps2 and it wouldn't play any of my backups in all 3 formats.That's the only player out of 30 to 40 or so that my backups play in.It's my only blemish, LOL
Now I booktype my media to dvd-rom and the overall compatability is superb from my benqs. Not so much for my other 3 pc burners.I still have that 1 old ps2 that won't play and suggested to my buddy to buy a $35 cheapo player.He's too cheap though,LOL
Every burner is different-just like those players,as I have experienced with 5 pc burners,so you'll want to have a quality dual format dvd burner/quality media from both formats/ and your overall stand alone playability should drastically improve.
When it comes to playing your backups,nothing is guaranteed.Too much crap can happen.By sticking with the good stuff,you'll have less issues.
Booktyping is the process of altering the dvd plus format and turning it into dvd-rom. Dvd rom is the normal format for regular stand alone players to play. By booktyping,you are fooling the players into thinking they are dvd-rom discs. This improves the compatability of more stand alones to be able you play your backups.That is how I burn the majority of my backups.I still have a few dash's left and I won't buy anymore in the future.I have more trouble with those same standalones playing my dash backups.
Booktyping the plus format can only be done on certain burners. Here's a few I know of: Plextor,Lite-on,LG,NEC,Ricoh,NuTech,and the ones I am very fond of: Benq 1620.
Pioneer is one that I know can't be booktyped,unless you have a hacked firmware.
Lite-on has a booktyping utility program. DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink also has boxes you can tick to allow you to booktype,if your burner has the capability.
