I have 4 avi files I would like to merge into one avi file. They have the same dimensions: 592x432. Several have a bit rate of 128 kbps and several have a bit rate of 96 kbps. All have an audio format of MP3 encoder. All have a video compression of DivX codec. All have a video sample size of 24 bits. The data rate for each is 147, 148, 149, 150 kbps respectively. Can these four files be merged with these current values? If not, what program do I need to have to make the values identical or is this possible? I am something of a newbie when it comes to avi file conversion so please excuse my somewhat elemental description of these files. Hope someone can assist me here. Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

Excellent post! Full of usefull stuff to help us help you.

Here's my method.
Get the latest version of VirtualDub.
Open the first file, select File, append segment, and open the second.
If all is well, no problem.
Click file, append segment, and open the third, and the fourth.

If you get any error message, you need to figure out if it's audio or video related.
If you get an audio error, you'll need to decompress the audio in all 4 files first.
In VirtualDub, with the first open, select Video, direct stream copy.
Select Audio, full processing.
Select file, save AVI.
This will produce a larger AVI.
Do this to all 4 parts, then go back to the beginning of this post to join.

If you get a video error, post back, and we'll sort out how to fix the specific error.

Cheers, Jim

I am getting an audio error on the third file. If I understand you, if this happens. Start from scratch and do the video and audio settings for each file and save each file individually and then join all the newly created files. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks for you very prompt and kind assistance.

Is that not what you wanted to do to begin with? That is merge them to create one overall file? Take into consideration, one AVI @ 700 megs decompresses to approximately 2.5 gigs in MPEG II format. This is assuming the AVI is standard AVI not XviD or DivX. Lighten up the load on your merge and the size will be dramatically smaller. Hope this helps.

Open the first, append the second and third.
Select video, direct stream copy, THEN file, save as AVI.
The finished file will be exactly the size of the 3 added together, not uncompressed, which is beyond huge.

Rebootjim- you seem to be quite the connoisseur with vdub. Can you point me in any direction to get graphical's or e-guides on this? I've been tinkering with it myself and see it's a real handy utility. Any advice is good advise @ AD. Thanks

I think doom9 has a guide somewhere.
Google and see what you find.
I just started using it about 5 years ago, so most comes from experience.
