DVD-R kills me

Ok, yesterday i was trying to make data dvds and it couldn't be read after burning. Those DVD discs were from Office Max: 100 discs for $50 I think and all discs had no label, just one purple side and one silver side. I suspect those are double-sided DVD+R. My burner is a Toshiba DVD+ReWritable. Shouldn't this work?

I also tried to burn data to DVD-R discs. This time, I could get into the disc and view the stuff that I copied, but when I tried to access them my PC just froze.

Now I have no clue what to do now. I don't know if it's a burner or disc problem. I use Nero and Burn4Free.

Sounds like a disc problem. Office Max discs are not known as quality discs.
Test to see who the manufacturer of these discs are (+ & -)with Nero in the NeroInfoTool. Click on the disc tab for the manufacturer id and post back.
I'll bet they are manufacturers not known for quality.
Some other hopefully helpful tips:
make sure your firmwate is up to date
Do not burn at max speed
use quality discs(media) only like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Buying instore: Fuji, Sony (look for made in japan) or Verbatim DataLifePlus.

So do you think it is a disc problem and not my burner? And with my DVD-R disc, that's something that's supposed to happen when burning with DVD+RW, right?

What does it say next to manufacturer id? That's the most important one right now. It's under blank capacity.

It doesn't say anything about manufacturer.
My burner is a Toshiba ODD-DVD SD-R5272

and I tried to use a DVD-R once and I got files burnt in it, just that I couldn't open anything...

Okay if Nero can't recognize the disc manufacturer - that's not good.
It normally means poor quality but a firmware up date may help (i would still switch disc brands anyhow).
In NeroInfoTool under the drive tab there is a field for firmware if it's lower than 1031 update it. Here's a link:

Try the firmware update (if needed) and try again. I would strongly recommend buying some quality media 1st though.
