Hi there...
I'm watching a backup copy and I found out that after several minutes of playback image freezes for a couple of seconds, then plays again very slowly, then freezes, the plays again for a couple of seconds like in slow motion and then freezes completely.
Any idea where to start fixing this problem? Bitrate perhaps?
I logged in on March 1st 2005, and it's incredible to believe that in so short time I've learnt all that I know about DVDs from this forum...

This sounds like you are Experienceing Burn errors on your Disk, This Happens from useing Cheap DVD Media and /Or Burning at too High of a Speed...I find as a General Rule of Thumb to Burn all Video DVD"s at half the Disks Rated Burn speed so if you are useing 4X Disks Burn them at 2X and if you are useing 8X disks Burn them at 4X ect and you should Not have this Problems....
I have had quite a Few DVD"S that do this and Burning at a Lower Speed seems to Fix the Problem most of the Time....

so, no re-encoding and such? Now that I check with AVICodec the bitrate is 7500 bps... should I re-encode again?
excuse my ignorance, but how does burning at "high-speed" affect the disc? I mean, do discs burnt at 4x, for instance, have a different pattern on the surface than one burnt at 2x?

Since DVD"s have no Error Correction data the Faster you Burn the DVD the More Chance of there being a Burn error so the Slower you Burn the Less chance of there being any Errors on the Disk....
If you can Rip the DVD to your Hard Drive without there being any Read errors then you should be able to Burn the Video_TS to DVD at a Slower Speed and have it Play back Properly on your DVD Player....
DVD Drives seem to be able to Read Disks Much better than the Drives in DVD Players...I recently had a DVD I Made of "The Grudge" that would Stop and Start and Stop and Start which made it allmost impossible to watch so i ripped the DVD to my Hard Drive and Burned it to Disk again but at a Lower speed and then Put it in my DVD Player and it Played Back Perfectly so the Problem must have been the Burning Speed??

Take Minions advice. Burning too fast can cause write errors therfor causing playback issues. The other most common cause of playback issues (freezing, pixelation) is poor quality media. What brand, media code, and format are your blank discs?

So it's the Error Correction thing that DVD lacks of that makes them "jumpy" you say? I would have never imagined that burning could have anything to do with that. I thought it was more a software thing than hardware... thnx!
About media I use Imation and Ridata mostly... 8x which were burnt at 8x I must imagine...
2 x should be fine?

You see guys, where I come from there's not so many alternatives honestly...
there are these printable white discs which I can't recall its brand, Ridata, Imation and Verbatim, and that's all!!!
And Imation are considered some of the very best!!!

look at the 1st page in the 2nd link in my signature - that's what happens with Imation discs where i'm from :)

@k0k0m0 - well the firmware (160E) seems to be current for that drive, so the finger of blame points back squarely at the crap media and/or middle of the road media :)

hehe, i replied to that thread~ :) also, to add to THIS thread...i used to use an optorite DD1205, it was a 12x drive/burner..died within 6 months~! i have found optorite's build quality to be sub-par, not a very good drive when i had it...since then i have switched to a sony dru-710a, pioneer dvr-109, nec 3520a, and liteon 1633s...all of which perform GREAT, leaves the optorite in the dust.
i think your combination of an average/below average drive plus questionable media is giving you these problems...along with too fast of a burn speed. i know $$ is always an issue along with the fact your choices may be limited in your area, but, i would get a good burner 1st off, secondly use ONLY the MCC disc that you have from the other thread creaky linked you (Verbatims 8x DVD+R are also the MCC003 coding, they are VERY GOOD media) and lastly slow down your burns to 4x for less chance of errors. that should do it, for now at least....

i had an optorite drive that read about 6 discs, wrote one, and was exchanged for my current trusty Sony burner. no more optowrite for me, that taught me for picking a drive i'd never heard of before

optorite drives REALLY SUCK in my OWN opinion, i had 2 of them, the 2nd being from an RMA since the 1st one died...this one lasted a little longer...maybe 8 months? then died too..i gave up after that, didn't want to deal w/ another return for SAME drive that would possibly last maybe a year? switched drives immediately, i have been happy ever since with my current ones :)
