Verbatim and Tayo Yuden are the most popular brands because of their superior quality, and i'd suggest using DVD-R since they seem to be less trying on the laser.

Everyone on this forum says to use the best media there is available to back up PS2 games. I've been using cheap media since I have been backing up PS2 games and they have worked fine for me with an exception of one game. They are from a giant electronics store called Fry's, I'm sure some of you have heard of it. They are in some states.
Here's an ad from the store: http://shop1.outpost.com/product/3906928?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
And here's something from the official online site:

They have worked almost perfect for me and they're really cheap.

hey max623, ever considered the fact that cheap media is more of a strain on the ps2 laser, which results in needing to replace your laser faster and more often, which will cost you more than the expences for a proper quality media?

I use RiData 8x DVD-R and must say the it is the best. I've never had a coaster or a bad disc and I have tried on at least 6 different DVD Burners.

You can find them @ www.supermediastore.com and get the ones with their logo on top. They go for about $42 for a spindle of 100 and worth every penny of it.

Anyone else tried this brand? If so, do tell your experience with them.

I bought a spindle with 50 TDK dvd-rs 8x(they didn't have them +), but they won't arrive until tomorrow, I'll tell you how they work by then, if they will boot at all, altrough I hope they work coz they weren't exactly cheap lol
