After reinstalling Windows 98 on my PC, I have trouble reinstalling Nero
5.5 (Nero installation CD-ROM obtained together with Ricoh burner I bought, automatic installation so that I do not have the serial number on the CD), I
obtain the following message (in French):
Les donnees de configuration concernant ce produit ont ete endommagees.
Contactez votre service de support technique.
(English translation: Configuration data concerning this product have
been damaged. Contact your technical support service).
After I got this message, I borrowed an installation CD from a friend (same kind, same version); I got the same message, so the CD is not responsible for it, it is something in my system.
Could anyone help me?
Thanks
PS Nero technical support has not replied me so far
Maybe Nero installation CD reads the old REGkey for Nero and finds that something is wrong on your machine... you could have to run REGEDIT and remove any Ahead key from the Registry (very dangerous, though!! Be careful when tampering with it).
The most important keys to remove are:
but again I must warn you about the danger of tampering with REGEDIT... when I upgraded from trial Nero to retail version I had to do the same thing (even if I did not receive that error). Maybe it will work...
Thanks for the reply,
I actually did this even before you posted your message. Does not help at all. I'd like to specify two things: the message appears while accessing something called Windows(R) Installer (I do not know what this is, but could the problem be coming from that side?), and I cannot use the trick I seem to have seen in some of the forum messages, i.e. install the demo version first (if it can be installed) because the CD I have, even though entirely legal, does not give me the serial number I would need (so it seems) thereafter. Actually, this bit surprises me a lot. How come some customers have an open serial number and some do not? I remind you, the disk came together with the Ricoh burner as a part of the package.
Could someone give me another advice?
Thanks

I'm afraid the problem may lie on Windows. Some system files might be messed up (Windows Installer is a std procedure of windows). Have you successfully installed any other applications after the upgrade?
Yes, I have installed other applications - including other Nero-related applications.
Moreover, I downloaded and installed Windows Installer 1.0.
I looked at the Installer log file; here is what it says concerning Nero installation attempts:
07/02/03 10:05:47 (Error ) Valeur inattendue ou absente (nom : 'PackageName', valeur : '') dans la clé 'HKLM\Software\Classes\Installer\Products\467B7D4A04144D1188BE0005AD53970C\SourceList'
(Translation of the first part of the message: Unexpected or absent value (name: 'PackageName', value'') in the key...
Are there more things to do? Help please!
