system won't recognize my dvd burner.

i installed service pack2 and all hell broke out. my system won't allow me to use my dvd burner. it only recognizes it as a cd drive. when i start up the system says new hardware found. Then it can't install it. says no driver found. is it the system or the drive is bad?? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! please

Use Master slave jumpering only, no CS. Install your boot disk as masteron primary IDE channel and the DVD burner as master on the Scecondary IDE channel. Check in the BIOS to verify all drives channels are set to auto and if an option is available to Auto detect all drives hit the key to do so. If you don't have the Motherboard chipset drivers installed, do so.

If your burner came with a disc:
Uninstall it and reinstall it

If you've made changes with your hardware:
Ensure the jumper settings on the burner match it's position within your PC

If your burner plays DvDs but won't burn to DvDs:
It may be going bad

If all else fails:
The burner may just be going bad

I feel your pain, I still run SP1 because my Dell does not seem to like SP2. It lost my drives too, and I finally just reformatted. Try a system restore to before SP2 see of it works.

if drive was working alright before sp2 was installed than uninstall sp2.
