If I were to buy

would that come with the plastic piece that you need to open the drive/lid?
I have a slim PS2 and have heard that it is not too safe to get a mod chip.

no. But there are online stores
that sell combo packs that have the
slimtool/magic switch and swap magic
or a flip top and swap magic.

What is the difference between the slim tool and the magic switch and what one works best?
And from doing searches in these forums it sounds like they are a royal pain in the ass, would it be smarter to just get the flip top?

It's not really hard to use the slide tool. I would personally go for the flip top - it's just more convenient to use than the slide tool. Besides there's a greater chance of the slide tool breaking. It's generally cheaper if you buy a 'package' which includes the flip top case and swap magic (try mod-chip.com). But make sure that the swap magic you get is a version 3.6 (the latest) not 3.3.
