I was wondering on how to reduce the time to backing up DVD's, and so with this mind, is it possible to to skip the encoding phase? I want to know is it possible to burn straight from the source disk to the DVDR without the saving of files to my hard drive? Beyond this question everything is working fine with DVD Shrink and AnyDVD. These combo's are great.

You can't use DVD Shrink to burn directly from the source disk. DVD Shrink is an encoder, you can't skip that process. It has to encode it to shrink to the proper size for burning. You must use Nero or CloneDVD 2 or DVD Xcopy Xpress or something like that for 1:1 copy from the source disc. Anything copying from the source disc, will make a temporary folder to the hard-drive and delete it when it's finished. If you just want to compress a dual-layered disc from DVD-9 (8.5GB) to DVD-5 (4.7GB) then you need one of the apps mentioned. However, if you have a dual-layered burner and burning a dual-layered disc, then DVD Shrink is not a necessary app to use.

Are you wanting to rip and burn on the fly with original dvd or a backup disc so you can make extra copies?

Exactly, I was wanting to know how to make duplicates of my backups. Instead of going through the encoding process again, I just want to make a direct copy of my already copied disk.

just do a 'copy disc to disc' with what ever DVD burning Rom you have.

Re-ripping backups:

I do quite a bit of this and here's a few tips to help with fewer issues.

1- Use quality media
2- Don't burn too fast on that first copy. You'll be using this to re-rip from so you want as few errors as possible. That one will be your master copy!4x speed for me.A lot of times I burn 2.4x on the first copy.
3- Use any copy disc feature from your dvd software-nero/sonic/roxio
4- Quality burner. I've notice some other burners I have had a harder time burn of the fly than my benqs. My brand new hp 640c coastered out the first one I tried. Over 300 re-rips with 0 coasters on my benq.

I only save 5 mins using nero's copy disc feature than when I make extra copies from the files already on my harddrive. The sonic program takes 5 mins longer. It's about the same as making a copy from my harddrive using DVD Shrink.

For a pretty fair number of my burns, I use AnyDVD & CloneDVD (bought the combo a couple of months ago before the $10 AD discount). Using this combo, I only copy the main movie because I don't care about the other things included on the original. Using this combo creates a "temporary" file on the hdd and automatically deletes it after the burn. The downside to this is if you want to make more than 1 copy or want to make another copy at a later date. I only have a 40gb hdd and this combo works fine for me. Sometimes I will change thing up a bit and use Decrypter & Shrink. If I do it this way, I have to delete the file from the hdd after burning.

You can make more than one copy at a time, after you finish burning, and it says eject the disk, just eject and put a fresh disk in, wait till you drive recognizes it and just hit write button again. You can also save the file to a folder on your hard drive instead of burning it and then burn it at a later date if you want.

I see my problem now. I own Sonic My DVD 4.5 and Roxio Easy CD creator 5. Neither of them will allow you to make a direct copy of a DVD. Maybe I will go out and buy Nero recode. I'm currently using Nero Express 6 Demo version. I like it because even though the demo has expired it still performs in backing my movies with no hassle. I don't want to disrupt this system.

atapp21,

Nero recode2 is a transcoder similiar to DVD Shrink and is actually written by mr DVD Shrink. He works for Nero now. For burning all you need is Nero express. I recommend deleting roxio if you have Nero. They don't get along and can cause software conflicts.

Mort81,

Will Nero express also allow you to burn from Disk to disk?
