i think it would be good to have a forum dedicated to unlocking mobile phones, rather than having the general Discussion threads and nokia, sony ericsson threads littered with "can u unlocky my nokia 3230"

Good idea. The last time I got a Nokia unlocked was by a person in a car radio shop. It cost £10. A few days after the phone started to turn off during calls. It was never like that before so it must of been the idiot who unlocked it. Another phone I had I downloaded a program and did it myself and it worked. The phone didn't encounter any problems and I saved myself a tenner.

Does "unlocking" mean just gaining access to all the hidden functions in a phone or does it mean free time?

Unlocking means that in several countries it is legal (and in several countries illegal) to sell phones that are "locked" to use only one particular provider, thus changing the provider either means that you buy a new phone or unlock your phone.

But about the new forum, my thinking is that the existing manufacturer-based phone forums should do the trick already, so if you need to unlock your Nokia, post your msg to Nokia forum room here.

You can also buy handsets which are "sim free" which means the phone is unlocked already but they usually cost more than a phone already locked to a network.

Also for anyone that isnt aware "IMEI number changing" is illegal and shouldnt be carried out full stop. This usually happens when a phone is stolen and the thief wants to carry on using it.

Just a tip for anyone who asks about it.

Sorta off-topic, but had to comment anyway, as I've lived years in States and in the UK where bundled phones are common :-)

The price of "sim-free" phone is the real cost of the phone, whereas when bought with a contract, the price is paid in higher call costs and monthly fees. This is opposite to system here in Finland, where operators can't, by law, force people to sign up to longer contracts than one month and phones can't be discounted or bundled with the service plan. And phone number can be switched to other carrier for free, within 2-5 days.

Result? As people can change their carrier basically all the time with no fees, always shopping for the cheapest option, the prices have been in free fall for years now. Calls to any Finnish network (nationwide) now cost on average e0.069 per minute (about 4 UK pence, about 8 U.S. cents) with e0.69 monthly service charge and are still dropping (latest offers are e0.039 per minute to any landline or mobile) -- so, the bundled phone and 12-month contract restricts free market flow and keeps prices high :-)

Im on O2 Pay As You Go and I get 300 free text messages a month as long as I top up with £10 every 30 days. Although I save £20 a month I no way near use that much. I don't really talk that often either and now with Google talk I can talk to my friends for free and if there out of their house I send them a text. So all in all i'm quite happy with my service and don't really need a contract which is what I was thinking of getting as you get a free phone but im not fussy. As long as the phone does its job then all is well.
