Is there a reason one should not rename the video object file to an mpeg file?

renaming it will not change the file.

Check the guides section of this site.

The reason I would do such a thing, is to burn these files as mpeg rather than video object files. My Nero burning software doesn't seem to like burning vob files as data, and I want to do that because I like to compile music video and performances.
The process that I have settled into involes using dvdshink to rip certain chapters. There may only be 5-15 minutes I wanto keep from any particular dvd, so it is quick.
Thanks for the guide links, only now I have more questions..doh!!

If the stream is decoding @6.5 mbps or 3 mbps, I assumed that meant megabets per second. If that were the case, wouldn't the files be much, much larger? (6mbps*60 = 360mb) + audio? per minute!!

remember that there's 8 bits per byte. So a DVDR that holds 4,700,000,000 bytes will hold 37,600,000,000 bits.

Thanks squizzle. After confusing bits and bytes, I may have actually reached bonafide newbie status. Your movie collection looks great by the way. I've been saving IMDb's pages as html to catalog my lame collection.

you should check out Intervocative's DVD Profiler. They have a free version which works just fine for profiling DVDs.

Well you actually can rename VOB file to Mpeg but the renamed File will still be Missing a Proper Mpeg timecode which is one of the Major differances between mpeg-2 and VOB....

If you load the VOB file into something like "Womble Mpeg2VCR" and then save the VOB file as a Mpeg-2 file then that will work without any Quality Loss as it will just rewrite the Timecode and Header and save it as a proper Mpeg file.....

Cheers

Strange as it seems, the .VOB files or the renamed .mpg files play back a little beter without the decoder reading the .ifo file. If I use Nero software to work with these files, the audio does get out of sync. I have noticed however, that I can rename the files back to their orignal state (VTS_01_1.VOB or whatever), and everything works fine, provided the other files were saved.
I seemed to notice some quality loss if I export the mpeg2 stream with Nero VisionExpress. I'll try the mpeg2vcr. Working with 200-500 mb files in dvd format is kind of silly. Nero recode seems to work much faster in dvd format than using Nero VisionExpress to export mp4.
I've started using Roxio Drag-To-Disc to backup the data, as either mpeg or VOB structure within a folder.
