I just upgraded from a Sony DRU500AX to a DRU800A.

I bought a spindle of the Ritek G05's, but I am having problems playing the discs after burning. (play, but freeze on Mintek DVD-1600, do not play on Polariod portable.)

Pics:

Disc 1

Disc 1

It looks like the disc is skipping and for some reason has gaps in it.

Can anyone explain why it may be doing this before I start searching for other media?

Thanks,

Hi,

I have exactly the same burner as you, albeit flashed with Lite On SOHW 1633S firmware.

THIS BURNER HATES RITEKS FULLSTOP G04's-and G05's.

At this stage, don't change anything on your pc. Firstly do your self a big favour and save yourself a lot of time - as a first step, try a non Ritek brand of disk. Riteks are great quality but not always compatible with all brands of burners.

My burner (same as yours), even when flashed with the Lite On firmware still has major problems with Ritek media and I spent the best part of 2 months trying to overcome this. We're talking after making countless tweaks on my pc and trying four different types of burning app's, formating the computer, etc, etc.

TDK DVD-R blue top 8X media and also Datawrite DVD-R 8X (with lead in code TTG02) I can strongly recommend - I get excellent and consistant results with these two(several hundred trouble free backups and rising).

Also for movies, burn at 4x or lower - far more compatible with stand alone players and much less chance of skipping.

The problems that you are having are very common when using blank media that is 'not liked' by a DVD burner. Often the movie either does not play at all on a stand alone player or it plays great right up to half way and then suddenly stops or skips like hell. Very annoying.

Try out some TDK / Datawrite / Verbatim media and see how you get on. If it doesn't solve your problem, there are all sorts of other things to try. Post back if need be and I'll be happy to help further.

Good luck,

Dave.

cmsurfer,

Just realised my typo............I used to have the same burner as you, but it was replaced at a later date with the one that you can see in my sig.

I still stand by what I said though - the DRU800A and also my current DW-22A have serious issues with Ritek, regardless of what changes I make to my machine.

Thanks, that was exactly the response I was looking for.

Since posting, I flashed the firmware on the drive from KY01 to KY04 and have yet to do any more testing. Even though I already flashed it, is it possible to flash again to the Lite On SOHW 1633S firmware you mentioned? But I will first do some more testing with the new to me firmware.

I used to have a Sony DRU500AX and it loved Ritek G04's and with the first batch of G05's, I was getting power calibration errors, so I just decided to upgrade since I wanted to anyway. I'm very suprised since my old Sony and the G04's worked great together.

Do you have any sources for TDK DVD-R blue top 8X media and Datawrite DVD-R 8X (with lead in code TTG02)? Can they be bought at a Staples or CompUSA? I'll take a ride today to look around. Also, how do I find out the lead in code on the Datawrite ones?

Thanks again for the help.

I'll be able to some testing this weekend and will report back.

Cool.

Don't think I'll be much help on the media suppliers, as I'm based in the U.K. and not USA. From what I gather other USA guys get good deals and selections from Meritline and places like CompUSA.

Regarding the lead in codes, I have some details at home on my other p.c.(I'm at work right now). Let me have a hunt around on that machine and I'll post back. It might not be until tomorrow morning GMT though, as I have a friends birthday party (drinking binge) to attend to this evening straight from work.

Just as a head start though, here's a picture of the TDK branded blue disks(use link below)and when on the page, scroll down to 'DV 3264'. They will work as good as anything with your burner.

http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/dvd-rnoprint.html

In the meantime, firmware wise, if tomorrow is a little too long for you to wait, try looking up the codeguys website for the Lite for alternative firmware (my SOHW1633s firmware will NOT work with your burner as my burner is a DW-22A dual layer. Please don't try to use it as it will probably fry your burner).

You'll need to establish the most suitable Lite On equivilent for your DRU800A and be aware that it could possible your warranty. I was prepared to take the chance.

Codeguys link:-

Any progress that you have prior to my contact in the morning, let me know if you would.

All the best,

Dave.

cmsurfer,

The sony DRU800A is a rebadged lite-on SOHW-1693S. I didn't think you could crossflash a DRU500A to a DRU800A.

If you buy your media locally make sure it says made in japan on the wrapper, except for verbatum which is made in taiwan. Some good online stores are supermediastore.com, rima.com, newegg.com, and meritline.com. Stay away from shop4tech.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

I'll search some of the sites I have bought Ritek media from and check for TDK's. They also sell demo packs, so I can pick on up and hopefully find out which ones work well.

I just got back from CompUSA and picked up a 10-pack of the TDK 16x -R's. I'll give those a go later on today.

Since I just flashed the firmware on the drive this morning, I'll stick with that to see how it works.

Thanks again.

Mort - I mis-understood dravidham's wording and thought he meant he had a DRU800A with the LiteOn firmware. He corrected himself in his next post.

Hopefully these TDK's I got will be a little better. I'm now stuck with about 45 Ritek G05's...

I usually shop from blank-cd-cdr.com, but I wil check the sites you mentioned.

Thanks,

My apologies. I misread your wording. I thought you crossflased from a 500 to a 800 (which I didn't think was possible) but now I see you replaced the drive. I've read good things about both the sony DRU800A and the lite-on SOHW-1693S. Something else you might try is an eeprom reset. Make sure you read about it well 1st and save your current data where it can be located. My litey was performing terrible with verbatum dvd+r's when I first got it but after an eeprom reset it burns them better than any other media. Thanks for the update.

I'll read up on that link.

Probably Sunday or Monday I'll report how the testing with the TDK's I bought today went.

Just an update...

I bought a 10-pack of TDK 16x DVD-R's with lead-in code TTH02 from CompUSA.

They play in both of my players, but in my Polariod PDM-0722, some of the copies would start to freeze/skip, but only at the end of a movie. Any ideas there?

So, I think I'll stick with some of these for now and see how it goes.

Hello cmsurfer, i had that problem with some TY's , try lowering your target dvd size a little maybe you are getting a little close to the edges? I lowered mine to 4300 and never had a problem since , you can always lower it then raise it a little each time to find the right size for you. Just a suggestion./Unjust

@cmsurfer,

I don't know what else to say and I can't really comment on Ritek due to the fact that I've never used them before. However, you can at least try to lower your burning speeds, or try other top medias such as TY, Maxell and Verbatim, and see if that helps.

I've had my Sony DRU 710 (BYX4 current firmware) since November 2004 and I have never experienced that kind of incident before. My medias are TY, Fuji 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan", Maxell and a few Verbatim -- and overall, it's backing up flawlessly.

I am using DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. I have limited the burn speed to 4x and 6x and the results are slightly better. I'll keep at it.

I will try lowering the target DVD size to see if that helps. I have done this before, but have yet to try it with the new burner.

I'm actually being pretty picky here. Most of the copies made with the new burner play pretty well on my stand-alone player, but some skip/freeze on my portable player. I'm hoping to get the copies to play on both well.

Thanks again for all the replies.

The reason I asked what apps you were useing is to guide you in lowering the dvd target size and it appears you are already aware of this. Try 4350 first and you may need to go even smaller. Keep in mind the lower the target size the more compression will be required thus affecting video quality. High compression can also cause freezing and pixelating on more sensative dvd layers. I recommend keeping your burn speeds at 4x.
