I recently bought a 2nd hand PSTwo. IT can only play original games, but the previous owner said it was because the mod chip inside was spoilt.

So, i got a chip from decided to DIY. I opened up the set and true enough, found 2 chips on the board. I took both off, but later realised one of them is the Laser diode Fix!

Now the problem is, i reasembled the PStwo without any chip inside to test it, and it does not play any original DVD game! It cant read and when i go to Browser, it says "Disc cannot be read".

Is it because of the Laser Diode being removed? Cos i read up on it and the installation instruction for the Diode Fix says to cut off a particular thread on the board.

Now, will a new laser diode added on to it make it work? Or the PStwo is already dead from booting up without a laser diode fix and with a thread already cut off?

Or can anyone tell me the name of this Diode that i removed?
Picture is at http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/7913/diode9yb.jpg

Please enlighten me anyone, I would not want to waste any money on the PStwo if its already dead!

P.S. I check the connection of the lens the 3 cables i plugged it in alright, but the middle one (ur supposed to lift it up to release the cable, maybe I dont know how to do it well) could be the cause. Any help is appreciated!

can anyone pls teach me? Will the lens become "Disc Read Error" after I remove the Laser Fix Diode, because on of the tracks was cut? Will it recover after i install a new fix diode?

The removed component in the picture looks to be one of the many pre-made Diode Fixes based on the original Matrix Team investigation (crudely drops voltage applied by mechacon). Removing it shouldn't have caused your pstwo to further degrade. I suggest checking to make sure you didnt accidentally bridge some close connections when you were desoldering. Also, im pretty sure that fix doesn't require cutting any traces, but if it does that would be a good thing to note too.

http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=laserv12

If all your desoldering work was fine, and the pstwo still doesn't function on originals, the laser might be fried. That can easily be replaced (for less than a brand new pstwo).

Thanks for the advice! I also tried to do up my V9 PS2.

The Romeo mod was done, without any errors.

I tried to solder the chip on, and after that, my PS2 wouldnt boot up.
It has the power light, and i pressed the Eject button, and both lights turned on. However, there was no display and the disc tray wouldnt eject. Any help on this?

I desoldered everything leaving only the Romeo mod, and it worked fine. Im a noob, so I dont know whats wrong with my soldering -_-

Like, if anyone can tell me roughly where the problem area is, then i can look out for that particular area during soldering.
Anyways the few points at the Back of the V9 Board is so troublesome! I cant get any solder on it; it just wouldnt eat! -_-

Pretty much all areas are problem areas, if you don't have much experience installing PS2 mods. The best way to find out if you accidentally bridged two points is to get a continuity tester. Personally my advice is to just send it to a reputable installer, or atleast someone you know with a lot of soldering experience.

As for the difficult soldering points, I think I recall seeing some v9 install diagrams with alternate solder points.

I just look at the mod chip installation diagrams, and saw that some wires have to be soldered on some chips on the board ( v9 ).

Does the pin have to be Lifted and disconnected from the original pad? Or just soldering the wire ON to it will do?

If the instructions say the pin is to be lifted, then it must be lifted. Otherwise it has to stay on the pad.

yea im using ripper IV on my v9. I found out the problem for the boot up failure and fixed it. now i turn it on and it cant read any games until i disable the chip(hold power button till the eject button lights up). But it jams a little, i have to press eject button for the ps2 to start up(it has lights but no display on tv). Anyone knows which pin this is caused by? cos i dont have a multimeter now and Im not really good at such tests( I thought soldering was easy -_-)
