I was recently recording something on my Dell Dimension 4600 with a SOny RW drive, not used a heck of a lot, but nicely used none the less. In the midst of recording it futzed out and I had to manually eject the CDr.
Since then I have not been able to record CDs! What happens is this:
Explorer notes the drive as CD-RW Drive [E:] and plays data and music cds (Rs and non-Rs). However, as soon as I put a CD-R in the drive it changes to read CD-ROM Drive [E:]. When I click to access the contents of the "CD-ROM" I get an error message box saying E:\ is not accessable. Incorrect Function.

Regardless of the brand of CD-R I get the same thing. It's maddning. I spoke extensively with Dell Support and they suggested replacing the drive as perhaps its recording sensor no longer worked. I did so. No luck. I also have an external DVD recorder that behaves in the Exact Same Way.

No virusus or AddWare that I can detect with current Norton, Ad-Aware and SpyBot.

Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I think that your operating system's drivers which provide main interface to CD/DVD peripherals are corrupted. You should try to restore your OS to a date before this strange behaviour occured.

Try uninstalling the drive /reboot and let XP pickup the drives through plug and play.
