I'm trying to convert some downloaded wmv movies into a dvd format (iso's preferabbly), so I can burn them to a dvd and watch them on my tv.
I've tried a few different programs but haven't had much success. Can anyone please explain how to make this conversion or point me towards a guide somewhere that can help me?
I have searched and searched google but have yet to find any USEFULL info on this topic.
Well when Encodeing WMV Files to Mpeg-2 for DVD you will generally have to use one of the Other Lower resolution DVD Formats Because in general WMV Files are Very low Resolution Files (320+240) and encodeing then to Full D1 Resolution Mpeg-2/DVD files totally Destroy any Quality the Images had in the First Place as Up-Sizeing the resolution of a Video file has a Very Big Negitive Impact on the Video Quality.....
If your WMV Files are 320+240 then I suggest that you use the SIF/CIF DVD Standard which uses Mpeg-2 files at 352+240 and a bitrate under 2000kbs which also allows you to Fit from 4 to 6+ Hours of Video on a Single 4.38gb DVD......
You will NOT be able to use one of those Simple One Click programs Like "VSO DivXtoDVD" to convert these files directly to a Video_TS Folder which you Burn to DVD because these Types of Basic programs only support one DVD standard which is the Full D1 720+480 NTSC or 720+576 For PAL standard which will resize youe Low res Files to a High Res which as I allready explained will totally Ruin the quality.....
I suggest you use a Good Stabdalone Mpeg encoder Like "Tmpgenc Pluss" to encode your WMV files to Mpeg-2 at 352+240 for NTSC or 352+288 for PAL with a bitrate between 1500kbs and 2000kbs and after you have encoded to this Format and Resolution you will need to use a Good DVD authoring program that supports the SIF/CIF DVD Standard Like "Tmpgenc DVD Author" or "MediaChance DVDLab Pro" so you can add your Menu"s and Chapters and to Burn the DVD.....
You will Notice doing it this way that the Quality will be Much Better than if you used the Full D1 DVD Resolution because you aren"t doing any major Up-Resizeing ..
You will also Notice that you will be able to Fit Much more on a DVD than the Ful D1 Standard which at most can hold about 2.5 hours of Video on a DVD but this Standard will allow you up to and excedeing 6 Hours of Video on a Single DVD.....

I'm trying what you said but it's taking FOREVER.
It's a roughly three hour movie, I have a 3.06 Gig P4 and 1.5 gig of ram. Yet i've had TMPGEnc running for a day and a half and it's only
56% done!
No it shouldn"t take that Long , not when encodeing to 352+240 resolution...If you are useing a Bunch of Filters then it will take a Lot Longer .....
I have a Simulr speed System as yours and on my System I can encode a File to Mpeg-2 at 352+240 at about twice real Time with TMPGEnc and about 6 times real time useing CCE or the MainConcept encoder....
If you are encodeing useing the "2 Pass VBR" encodeing Mode then it will take twice as Long as Normal.....
Well Since it has no audio then you will have to somehow extract the audio from the WMV file and convert it to a DVD audio format....
If you use a Program Called "ASF Tools" (Freeware) it will let you Load the WMV file and then give you the Option output it as a Wav audio file then you can load the Wav audio file into TMPGEnc and encode it to a "Mpeg-1 Layer 2" audio file at "48000HZ" and then use the Mpeg Video file and the audio file to author to DVD with your DVD authoring Program...It should not take very Long, maybe a few Minutes ....
