when I try wo burn with these discs I immediately get errors. "illegal disc", "not able to write at once". I don't even have the write at once box checked or finalize box either for that matter. I'm guessing on the finalize thing, but it's probably because it's RW, correct? heck as soon as nero recognizes the disc it won't allow to check the box(es) anyway, they're grayed out. HELP! does my writer not like the media? there was a sticker on the pack of five that stated restrictions about the up to 4X speed, but that shouldn't make a difference, I burn at 2X no matter what. I thought I could use them for TV shows I have recorded to my hard drive, so I could watch erase and use them again.

personally, i NEVER use or recommend TDK, their manufacturers vary from the best being Taiyo Yuden..the THE WORST CRAP of CMC MAG. these dvd-rw's are most likely :

TDK DVD-RW 4.7GB TDK601saku.. 4x

i never liked the compatibility of TDK media, the very few i have tried...not good on any of my various burners...that's just my opinion, but, i don't think it's your software or your burner..it's the media in this case... perhaps try different DVD-RW media? i've had good success w/ maxell rewriteables...good luck.

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

I'm new at this and didn't know what to buy. I bought 2 boxes of TDK (10 packs with the DVD style cases. One box of DVD-R and one Box of DVD+R.

So far no problems with the TDK DVD-R, but a ton of the same errors you are getting each time I use the TDK DVD+R. I used Dvd identifier and found out that the DVD+R are the crap CMC MAG which I have been reading up on these boards and how they are crap. It's true.
FYE the TDK DVD-R's aren't made the same way, some other brand. But they seem to work.

What you can try to do is use the disk over and burn again, even though it might have nearly finished the burn. I was able to do it a few times and it worked, but sometimes it didn't. I would give it 3 shots at a burn and then coaster time.

I have come to find out after some research and a look an Sony website that the burner that my Vaio came with, it says on the site it's a sony burner, has some issues specifically with these tdk 4X DVD-RW discs. get this, the site also says the issue in cannot be resolved. leave it up to sony to put some proprietary crap in their machine. they say the best I can do is upgrade my firmware, but the also do not guarantee that it will fix anything, only the issues the firmware is intended to resolve.

TDK DVD-R media from Costco: 4x = TTG01 8x = TTG02
Both flawless in my Pioneer DVR-108 and NEC 3520A burners. No coasters or bad burns. No complaints.

Yep, the TDK-DVD-R work fine. It's the TDK DVD+R's and RW's that people need to stay away from

it's the damn media and the damn burner. I can't update the firmware, because there aren't any updates. I get my media for free, but unfortunately what's available to me for free is crap. the computer however is another story. I purchased it pretty recently and I'm not replacing the burner just yet. so for time being I'll deal with and find some dvdrw media that's whatever-the-hell-brand-of-burner-that-comes-with-sony-vaio-friendly. thanks for the support folks.

question for qwik4a6. how do you use the disc again? don't asign to finalize from the start of burn procedure? if it's nearly finished from the previous burn, does it pick up where it left off, or does it overwrite the preciouslt written material? if it does happen to finalize even though it nearly finished, there won't be enough room on the disc for anything else. I'm confused. please explain that one.

here's the message from the sony support page:

A new type of 4x speed DVD-RW media (Version 1.2) has recently become available on the market.

While some DVD-RW optical drives (1x or 2x) that ship with VAIO® computers can write to DVD-RW 4x media, most drives do not support this format.

If you have a DVD-RW optical drive (1x or 2x) installed in your system that does not support the new DVD-RW 4x format, you will see error messages and/or the disc will simply not be recognized when the newer type of media is used.

There is currently no solution for this incompatibility, however Sony recommends that you always update your drive´s firmware to the latest versions as they become available for your computer model.

This issue may apply to the following VAIO® Desktop and Notebook computers that shipped with a DVD-RW optical drive (1x or 2x) installed:

of course my vaio was listed.

what the hell do they mean by version 1.2, is that one: after you load the disc you've paid for and opened it to find out point 2 seconds later your stuck with it? does anyone know of the store where they let you try the media out first then return it when you find out it's not friendly with your machine?

sounds like you need to stick to rewritable media that is only 1-2x for now, until newer firmware becomes available, if at all; not all firmware can magic the drive into a faster drive :)
