Which slimline PS2 laser fix is better?

The irony is that if I hadn't looked into modding my PS2, I never would have found out about the laser problem, so modding is a good thing! Anyway, there seems to be two types of PS2 slimline modifications, a resistor fix and a diode fix. I've looked all over the place but there doesn't seem to be any consensus as to which one is better. I ordered a DMS4 lite and it comes with the diode fix. Which one is better? It seems that people who have done the resistor fix still have had laser failure, so that doesn't seem to be a good solution. Has anyone had a laser failure with the diode fix? Can someone point me in the direction of a more detailed discussion about what the problem exactly is, I've done a lot of searching and have found references to summ0ne fix, but there never seems to be any explanation. I'm an electrical engineer and understanding the problem would make me feel much better about the solution.
