Help with GOVideo DP8440 and home burned DVDs??

Hi,

I recently replaced my dead Magnavox MPD-700 with a GOVideo DP8440. In general, the DP8440 works well. Except: home burned DVD-Rs display oddly - with occasional blocky artifacts, skips,blank outs (screen goes blank with a little color along the edges of screen), and when you move the screen back and forth the image blanks in and out. None of this happens with a commercial DVD.

Not all home burned DVD-R's are this way. DVD-R's that I have captured via Sonic MyDVD 6 (using 'capture to disc' feature) from VHS work fine. The backups I have made via DVDDecrypter work fine too.

The ones that display this odd behavior are the ones I have burned via Nero Ultra 6.6. Mostly these are discs made from mpeg files with Nero Vision 3.

All of these home cooked DVDs play find in WinDVD and cinePlayer - and don't have the odd display behaviour.

Ignoring the backups for a minute, all variables are the identical: same burn pc; same media (maxell dvd-r, 8x); same dvd-R/RAM drive (GMA-4020B).

Where do I start looking? It doesn't seem to be the player - most discs play fine. Only discs that come from Nero display this behavior. No I haven't burned a home brew disc MyDVD (other VHS captures) because MyDVD doesn't support the files I am trying to burn to DVD.
