softmod or chip which one?

I am looking for an answer to see what has been done to my Xbox. I baught a premod unit, I was told it had a chip in it! but I took it apart and only thing that was tampered with is the HDD unit. The trick is that the Xbox does everything as if it had a chip in it. The unit boots all games original and backup, all Movies, it plays PAL and NTSC all regions. Also I am able to load the HDD with games. How can this be done if no chip? How can this be done without a chip? all game saves go to the HDD and I don't need any boot games or memory card exploits. If anyone has an answer please tell me. Thanks

I bought the system new with mod, it is a version 1.6, I paid 200 dollars and they sell the games for 2.50 each. Also came loaded with HDD loader,DVD player software, Genesis and neogenesis emulators with all of the games.
I don't think it is a bad deal but I am still wondering why go with a chip and chance messing up the mother board with soldering when a softmod does the same exact thing.

its because people like mod-chips better because it gives more feauters then a softmodd sure a softmodd is cheaper but people go with the mod-chip.with a chip you can turn it off so you can play xbox live.and you can change the hardrive with the chip depends on what chip though so you dont have do all that work just to switch to a bigger hdd theres alot more details at http://www.xbox-scene.com that's a good price for softmod.
