Does anyone know if the Xecuter 3 Ce chip is comatible with dvd+R double layer backups? I need to find out if its my chip or the memorex disks I'm using. I've heard that memorex DVD+R dl discs suck.

If by "compatible" you mean able to play Dual Layer DvDs, the answer is yes. I recently watched "Hitch" & "Are We There Yet" on my Xbox and they played fine.

If that's not what you meant, please clarify. :0)

Yeah that's what I meant. I backed up my Jade Empire game onto a Memorex DVD+R Double Layer disc. For some reason my xbox won't read it. I know its not how I make the backups because other backups on regular DVD-R discs work great. I have heard that Memorex DL discs are crappy, maybe that's it. Which DL discs do you use so I can get those?

Memorex
Samsung
Hewlett Packard
& Philips.

I haven't had any problems yet so it's hard to prefer one to you. Maybe I would say Samsung. Try shopping at TigerDirect or NewEgg for blank media. They usually have a lot of good deals.

DVD±R/RW and CD-R Compatiblilty can not be Garranteed by a single Modchip. It sounds like you have a doddgy DVD-ROM Drive that's fussy. And not at all uncommon! I have a Phillips DVD in mine and it doesn't seem to care what DVD Media I thorough at it. It will however instantly puke itself on a CD-R though. So it's always been feed CD/RW's and everything was fine.

You might try searching eBay for a used XBOX? Samsung Drive or one of the PC equvilents and then mod that to your XBOX? of you can do the latter. Then you'll finally have one of the few XBOX'es? that could actually read a CD-R...

OUCH!!! Here comes Ichijoe with the good news. :) If that's the case "your DvD Drive" there is a link floating around in one of the XBOX forums where they had drives for $20. It may take some work but might save you a few bucks if you find it.

Well if someone is able to prove me wrong about how and what Media a DVD can 'read' with (or without a Modchip), I'd gladly eat my Hat!

Let's not confuse the issue by saying a Modchip can boot 'Unsigned Code' (i.e. 'Backups'), which is true enough. Unless I 'missed' the point, the question was about 'Media compatibliity'.

And unless you actually modify the Hardware (i.e. Laser Pickup), or the 'Firmware' on your DVD Drive. You will not find an easy way to read what is essentualy unsupported Media.

The only good news is that most (if not all XBOX? DVD-ROM Drives should be able to read CD-RW's. Perhaps you should try a DVD -RW. As opposed to say a DVD +RW

If you'd like a short term solution to this problem. Get a nice fat 200Gb HDD and backup your Games to a location like 'F:\Games'. You Games will load up faster and you don't have to track down any wandering (or missing Discs'), And if you have young kids around! The little tikes can't go 'round scratchin 'em all up and stuff...

That would be your best bet. It would save you money in the long run as well as wear and tear on you DvD Burner.

Thanks for the help guys. I have two things to say. One, my Xbox is a halo green console with a Samsung drive which I have heard is the best so far. Also, I have a 200GB Maxtor Drive in my computer, but don't know if its compatible. I think it also may be the settings on Nero. What are the settings that you guys use to back up on DL discs?

Ok how about you explain yourself a bit more clearly in you method of 'Backing-up' your 'Software'. I think ~snif~ I can ~snif~ smell the problem now!

First of the XBOX? does not use FATxx or NTFS. Ever try inserting a Game DVD into your PC? You can't because 'dowze can't read those Disc's by deafult because they are in what is generaly kown as the 'XISO' (or XBOX? ISO), format. So assuming you can 'copy' your 'Files' to the PC via a FTP Program to the PC ...To be burned.

You are in fact so changeing it's Format that such Discs will never play in any XBOX?. Modded or no, M$ Signed Code or no. Because like your XBOX? Game DVD's on your PC. The XBOX? can not read those Disc that are written in a standerd Windows ISO Format.

Next time use a good (to PC), Riper / Packer Software (i.e. Quix! from Team Avalaunch) this Program will allow to create these so-calles 'XISO's' that you'll then be able to burn from with-in Nero just like any other ISO. Save that you'll then be able to use such Disc's in your XBOX?...

As far as the sprare HDD (it was a spare right?), is conserend there's no reasion why it shouldn't work so long as it's an ATA-133 (or better Spec.), that can be locked. The only trick if there is on is to actually get the drive into the XBOX? and then get it Formated for use with the XFS (XBOX? File System),

The safest way I'd want to do it is to try and locate a copy of Slayers (or some other "Install" CD) and use the 'Format' options there. Which will have you totaly up and running in aobut 8 ~ 10 Minutes.

Just one not of caution! Before you phyiscaly remove your old (stock)? HDD from the XBOX? make sure to run a program like 'ConfigMagic' (infact find and run 'ConfigMagic' if there were a better Program out there I would have heard of it by now!), to set the unlock code for the HDD inquestion. The turn your XBOX? and yank it! If you ever swaped out a HDD or CD/DVD Burner before. This should all feel like Home to you! Connect the New Drive back up and then just boot the XBOX? with something like the Slayers CD/RW in the Drive and enjoy

Thanks. I'm aware of how to make a backup by networking your xbox, and I can make working ones just fine. I was actually talking specifically about the settings in Nero once I have already created the iso with Craxtion 4 so it will work with DL discs.

The only DVD+R DL that I ever burned for the XBOX? was Ninja Gaiden and as I recall I just inserted the Game Disc into my XBOX? while on the Avalaunch Dashboard (as not to autoboot into the said Game). And then connected up to my XBOX? though Quix! (by Team Avalauch),.

I just pointed Quix! to the XBOX's? DVD-ROM Drive and told it to pack it up as an XISO. Which it did after around 20 (or so), Minutes latter. At which point I just burned it as I would any normal .iso File. Granted I had no chiose but to use a DL as the Game was over 6Gb's.

I don't recall any 'setting' for Nero. My current Burrner does not support 'Bit-Setting' if this is the kind of 'Setting' you had in mind. It doesn't seem to be a major loss for me. :|

You said you had no problems with other DVD± 4.7gb Media? Could it be that your not able to burn DL discs? (In so far as when the Drive was originaly sold), I mean I alwasy loved hacking my poor DVD+ ONLY burners to burn- Media as well. But, the results were nothing but mixed at best. So I'm only trying to take this angle into possible consideration.

BTW: Which version of Nero are you useing? And more over is it up-to-date?? The current version of Nero is 6.6.0.16. Perhaps it's time to update?

BTW: The DVD+R DL I used was from SK (i.e. no name brand), I do not have the Software installed to tell you the real manufacture (i.e. Ritek, Optodisc or Prinkos etc...) *Edit* It was a Ritek Disk *Edit*

I can tell you however that, Prinkos (sp) are some of the worst kind of Media you can get for any kind of backups.

I'm using Nero Burning Rom 6.3.1.12 with a Sony DRU-710A DVD-/+R/RW/ Double Layer. I'm using Memorex double Layer Discs, which a couple of other people in these forums have labeled as crappy. I'll try to get Ritek Discs if they worked for you. Thanks.

Not sure if I made it clear but, when I say 'SK (no-name brand)' That would be the equivalent to say 'Memorex' as the retail Brand. But, when I said 'Reitek' That would be the OEM or the guys who produced the Disc's in the first place. So I don't think you can actualy buy 'Reitek' DVD's as a Brand.

A good piece of Sofware to determine the media type (i.e. Manufacture), is called 'DVD Identifier' with this you can insert a DVD Disc (it doesn't have to be a blank!), and hit the 'Identify' Button to see which OEM actully made the Disc, in the first palce. Sadly however, there is no way to know this before hand. Because even brands like 'Memorex' could use diferent Fabs (i.e. Reitek, Princo etc..), to make there Discs for them. If the brand of Memorex that you now useing should in fact be rebadged princo (the correct spelling of Prinkos), then you'd be correct in wanting to avoid that brand in the future.

As for Nero I think it best to download and install the lattest updates as your way behind the current 6.6.x.x version. Doing so can only be of some help to you.

I think I need to change the booktype from DVD+R DL to DVD-Rom in Nero in order for the Xbox to read the double Layer Discs. I'm all out right now, but I'm going to Circuit Ciy tomorrow and will try with a new pack.
