Action Replay Max Evo and modded ps2

I made a backup of the Action Replay Max evo and it boot it perfect from my modded ps2. I read in the forums that I cannot use the Action replay with backups games...is that still true?? how can I play backups with codes with Action Replay??

The Action replay boots perfect but I haven't been able to use the features of the the software...could it be because it is a backup??
