I want to back up my dvd, but when I try to rip it with dvd decrypter I see that it is bigger than a 4.38 GB disc. How can I rip it and then split the movie into two parts and still keep the highest quality possible?
I have ripped just the main movie, one .ifo file and the .vob files needed, with SmartRipper but when I try to open the .ifo file in WMP there is an error; I have to open the .vob files in order to watch it. How can I fix this?
If I rip my dvd with SmartRipper, how do I split the movie into two parts, keeping the highest quality possible, and still burn them to two discs, because the movie is bigger than one disc?
Hope I explained my questions well enough and thanks for any help.

Rip with DVD Decrypter. Too big? Shrink it with DVD Shrink. It's free and you can download it from this site. YOu can split the movie or burn the whole movie. The quality is great and you can even play a little with the compression level. It does a great job at maintaining good backup quality.

Once you get the movie ripped to the hard drive, the hard part is over. Shrink is free, but any of a number of transcoders will shrink the movie to fit a DVD5 disc (4.377GB). DVDCopy3 is one of my favorites. Some are better than others and some offer different advantages. Some will automatically select the movie only with a working menu to be transcoded, cutting down on the compression. You don't want to be messing around with the individual VOB, IFO, and BUP files unless you're really good. If you want free, Shrink will work well. If you don't mind spending a few bucks, DVDCopy3 is good. You can check it out with the free trial at http://www.intervideo.com before buying. That's one you can try and make up your own mind. If you're really wanting to split a disc, there are some apps that would do it. I don't remember any currently available, but someone probably still has one. As noted, it can be done with Shrink, but it is in how you edit and isn't a straight forward command.

You might want to look at DvdFab Platinum...it is capable of splitting the disk (movie) onto two discs (which is cheaper than DL.) yet I personally do not like that option when using free Progs such as Rebuilder (with HC HANKS, QuEnc) offer great qulaity even when it compresses onto 1 disc. I use Intervideo Dvd copy 3 Platinum along with Clone DVD 2 when I do not use Rebuilder Pro with CCE encoder. It seems there is a variety of progs that can split the movie with no compression, but I believe that the quality with Rebuilder/CCE is hard to beat and I'm comparing a movie that is 2:1/2 longs and is compressed onto 1 disc (using DTS audio stream), the back-up as perfect as the original (agin in my opinion!) I have used shrink to split a movie to take out a section that I didn't want then placed the two sections on HD and then used DVD2One to join them together before burning the file with Nero. DVD2One has a great joining program. Hope this helps.

I was trying to keep it as simple as possible for a beginner. As far as talking software, the suggestion of RB with CCE is sound. It's one of the best encoder setups available. Though a bit difficult sometimes for a beginner. It's now easier with the Rockas installer. Just make sure you have the AviSynth installed before installing the app. Check http://www.dvd-rb.com for info and downloads for Rebuilder. As far as transcoders go, DVDCopy3 is an excellent choice and it works well with either DVD Decrypter ripped files or with the driver decryption tools like AnyDVD. The trial for AnyDVD can be found at http://www.slysoft.com and DVDCopy3 can be found at http://www.intervideo.com . CloneDVD2 is a transcoder from SlySoft the same folks that supply AnyDVD. No need to use it together with another transcoder, it's good, but not as good as DVDCopy3. RB like Shrink will require a burner. They can use Decrypter. My preferences go with CopyToDVD and Nero. Programs like DVDCopy3 and CloneDVD2 incorporate burning software. Another good app for transcoding is Recode from the Nero suite.

brobear, thanks for the reminder...sometimes I get excited about sharing all the neat progs and possibilities that for some it can seem overwhelming. I also like Copy to Dvd. I agree that Intervideo Copy 3 is a higher qulaity of back-up than other transcoders, I always remind that unless you burn with 4x media, you would need to place the target as a folder on the HD and burn with either Nero, Copy to dvd, or Decrypter; otherwise there is no way to control the burn speed. Also, great job on directing others to the appropriate sites. AD is the place to grow and learn and acquire so much knowledge and have fun doing it. Thanks brobear

You're welcome. Here's a link to one of the more comprehensive guides for using DVD Shrink. It may be a bit dated, but the basic commands and editing are covered. http://www.dvdr-digest.com/articles/articles.php?article_id=23&mo... The big difference with the latest Shrink version is the "Quality Settings" which were added for better quality at higher compression levels.
Here is a link for some quick guides that are helpful for getting a quick start with Shrink. http://www.dvdshrink.info Try out the Shrink and use the guides to learn how to use it. It's free and a good learning tool. Get the DVDCopy3 when you get to where you can use Shrink. The interface with DVDCopy3 is fairly intuitive once you've learned how to use a transcoder. Use the trial and compare.
