Advanced System Optimizer
Ace Utilities
Fix-It Utilities

I prefer using Advanced System Optimizer. It probably cost about $25-$30. Sorry I know you said free.

Here is a review for it http://registry-repair-software-review.toptenreviews.com/advanced...

Depending on the program you decide to use it's capabilities may vary but some would be...
- find any files and folders that may have been moved on your hard drive and help you correct the registry entries that point to them.
- can scan the registry for:
· orphan file/folder references;
· invalid font references;
· auto run programs;
· obsolete Start Menu items;
· invalid help file references;
· invalid application paths;
· invalid shared DLLs;
· invalid known DLLs registry references;
· unused software entries.
- finds invalid paths to referenced files, folders or fonts on your drives (if they're moved from their initial locations) and corrects these registry entries to actual located objects. Also, if your registry still retains links to file(s) of deleted applications, it may find these invalid entries and you can delete them.

For the most part, the average registry program will be able to...
- Scan the registry for invalid or bad entries.
- Scan the hard drive(s) for the missing files.
- Select the fix for your invalid registry entries.
- Save a backup file of your registry.
- Fix the registry!

i second the vote for CCleaner (Crap Cleaner). it is the best free reg utility for making sure programs are uninstalled completely. it has an integrated add/remove programs feature that actually removes entries from the "start menu order" key. hardly any other reg utility can do this properly, even the ones you have to pay for...

i like to eat turkey...

@arniebear
Thanks for that post about CCleaner. I had never heard of it or used it but when I saw your post I decided to try it.

"YOU'RE RIGHT" I've used 2 or 3 other programs for the same purpose and they really don't compare. The ultimate characteristic is FREE.

Thanks again.
