First i use DVDShrink and shrink it to less than 4.7gb, and then just burn the fiels that it stored on my hard drive on to a DVD+R disk?

Probably not, since the most you can burn on a single-sided DVD is 4.38GB. In Shrink, you can set the maximum size, by using the "custom" setting to a size of 4360, I set mine to 4455, however, I am in the minority on that size, but I have never had a problem with that size overwriting.

I am not sure if this is the case, but I have noticed that using shrink to make an ISO file increases the compatibility of burned movies. I tried a couple of movies using the DVD folders and they are not compatible with one of my DVD players, but the ISO ones are.

When you do a backup, set the output to ISO image, or use the Burn with DVD Decrypter option. Also, burn at 4x max. If you go higher, there is a higher chance of write errors.

Oh, and if you want to be safe, compress to 4300 or just leave it at automatic. Compress the Menu and extra features to the max!!! Also remove any extra audio tracks and if you have to, change stuff like previews, directors commentary, etc... to still images. Just remember where you have to press the "menu" button on your dvd remote.
