hi i'm really new to this DVD ripping lark, so bare with me! I've been following the DVD to VCD guide from this very sight and using the proggies described (smartripper, DVD2AVI and TMPEGEnc) alls well until i get to the part where i have to cut the movie into pieces to burn to CD-R. cutting is no problem. the problem is the output file that is created (the cut bit of movie) isn't recognised. it doesn't have the .mpg file extension at the end. i'm obviously doing something wrong, but i don't know what. can anyone help as i'm not really a techie person

Windows XP Home, Intel P4 1.6Ghz, 512 SDRAM DVD/CD-RW Combi

What file extension does it have? I'm not up on doing vcd's myself but I thought I remembered VCD uses a BIN extension.

if you are using tmpgenc, you should not have to cut the movie. You need to use the source range option to 'cut' the movie. An example of how to do this is at http://entiendo.gotnet.net and go to dvd makin'.

hi, thanks for replying
i'll certainly check out that website. as for your questions the files produced afterwards using TMPGEnc to cut them have NO file extension, it just says 'file' with no .mpg, .avi, nothing. if i select a program to open it (right click it, select a program from a list, media player 8) IT DOES play, but the file icon is the one where windows doesn't recogise it.
as for not using TMPGEnc to cut it, thats the program the guide on THIS site says to use and gives instructions how to do it, so as far as those guidelines, i'm not doing anything wrong.
i have the movie ripped to an mpeg format at 1.1 Gb's, so i need to cut it.

what should happen is that you rip the movie. It will produce 5 to 8 vob files, each 1 gig +. Then you will take those files and use dvd2avi and produce a large wave file and a small .d2v file. From there you load those up in tmpgenc and create your movies(at this point you would use the 'source range' to split the files).
