I've been looking for a program to back up all my DVD's for a while now. I can't seem to find a good program. Everything I download tries to rip the film in AVI or MPEG and I get poor quality results. I'm looking for something that will rip in perfect DVD quality and do it simply. Is there a free program out there that anyone would reccomend? Is there such a beast? So Far I have Magic DVD Ripper and Smart Ripper. Are either of those any good?

Try DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink (both freeware)with both software and guides available from this site.

Have used these programs with Nero for nearly two years and 1000+ burns without any problems.

Yea I downloaded decrypter already. Looks pretty neat, although I do wonder what the point is of having 2 different pieces of software to do the same job is. Thats why I didn't get Shrink. Sounds like something from a Sienfeld episode.... Anyway, Are most videos divided into equal parts on a DVD. I told Decrypter to rip the vid, it is now, but it started ripping like 4 or 5 files in VOB from the Matrix Revolutions. That's normal I believe, but just checking. Also, in the beginning, it asked what country the disc was from. I said US/Canada although I really had no idea. Where can this information be found on the case? Thanks for any further help as well as the software you linked me. Looks liek a real find. When the ripping is done, is there a way to combine all the files? Is this a smart idea? Could it make the DVD player have a hard time reading the file? Would it make it lag some while watching. As you can see and the title given to me right under my, "nick name," I'm new to this sort of stuff. ( I bet you already figured that out though) Does anyone know of a PMP/PVP that can play VOB files? As of right now I'm looking at the iAudio A2 which looks promisiong, soon to be released I hope, but it plays the normal Divx Xvid Mpeg kinda stuff. Thanks again.

Is there a recomended software to view the VOB file once it is finished. What is the average rip time for a 2 hour video as well? Lot O' questions, I know. I'm fairly inquisitive, and better I ask now than never.

I ripped the Matrix fully, only to find it was in French! Can I change this some how?

Edit: Um, this software keeps ripping the vids in other languages than english. Is there a way to forcefully rip in a prefered dialect? Also, it seems like 1 out of 4 VOB files will start for like a tenth of a second and then not be able to play. is it something I'm doing?

DVD Decrypter is essentially for ripping and burning. Many commerical movies are over 4.36Gb in size and you will need to compress or re-author them to fit on a standard DVD5 disk.

DVD Shrink is a very good program for compressing and re-authoring. After you have ripped with Decrypter, open files in DVD Shrink and then choose re-author mode. You will then have the option of selecting the langauage and audio streams you want and deselect the ones you do not want and/or get rip of unnecessary garbabe (extras, director comments etc.)

Have a read through the DVD Shrink guides avaialable on this site.

Oh, ok. Thanks a lot. I already deleted the rips that I did cause they wer ein like Spanish and French every time. I'll try what you said. Also, when you, "Shrink," the file, won't there be a loss of quality? Also what are these guides you speak of? I mean do they really help? So far everything has been really self explanatory. I mean, you change anything you want in preferences and hit rip... Anyway thanks again, you've been a huge help to me colw.

I used DVD X Copy/Platinum for years but switched to AnyDVD/CloneDVD2 when copy protections changed (Sony Movies) and haven't had a single coaster or movie that it wouldn't rip. Not free, but well worth the money. And extremely easy to use, even my wife has no problems.

Yea, I wasn't looking to really spend money on the software. I can't justify spending money on something I can't really see you know? I wanna buy a burner, or something as simple as a hotdog, not a combination of magnetic charges. Any way, how do you get the movie to fit on one disc after you rip it? One last question, why can all these files fit on the DVD-5 disk you rip it from, and not the one you're going to burn it to? Makes no sense in my mind.

Alright, well I ripped a vid with decrypter right, I then try to open the files with shrink, and it says it can't read em. I then click the "backup" button in shrink and it starts analysing the files on the disk. I tell it to rip just the movie, and it begins to rip the whole thing again, but only before it deletes the files I had done with decrypter. OK, so it's done, I then tried to burn it onto a DVD-R and I click backup. That didn't work, what settings do I need to use to burn it onto a DVD-R?
