I'm planning on finally getting a Playstation 2 in the near future. Before I throw down $150 or so on the system itself, I'd like to make sure I have everything I need to be able to play imports and backups, and I'd appreciate it if anyone could answer these specific questions:

1) Is it possible to backup an import and change the region code on the disc image in the process, eliminating the need to mod the system for imports altogether?

2) What model PS2 is generally the most reliable, and how can I make sure I'm getting the right one?

3) I'd prefer not to open up and mess around with the insides of the console itself if I don't have to, but I can if necessary. What options do I have?

Any help would be appreciated. I live in the US, and I'm mostly concerned with JP imports, so NTSC/PAL conflicts are likely a non-issue. Also, all I have at the moment is a single layer DVD+R(W) burner. I know I'm out of luck for dual-layer backups, but does +R media suffice for PS2?

To answer with what i know:
1. you'll still need a mod or swap magic to be able to boot any backup, period. there is no other way.
2. I wouldn't know much about that, but if you want to easily add a HDD later on, you might want to get an "older" ps2 (e.g. not a slimline model)
3. There are generally 3-4 options : [1] get yourself a pre-modded ps2, or buy a regular one, then have it modded by a pro modding service.
[2] get the ps2, order a mod online (wether you get a solder on none solder chip would be up to what it needs to be able to do) and install it yourself, tends to be more risky.
[3] get swapmagic and a slidecard, that minimizes the need to open it up(all you'd need to do would be recover the cd tray's front cover)
[4] get swapmagic and a fliptop. you would need to take the ps2's frame apart and install the fliptop.

And your final question depends on your ps2. most older versions will either have a hard time playing dvd+r or won't play them at all, allthough there are exceptions to the rule.

well to play burnt Cd's or DVD's in the PS2 u need a mod chip or some for of swap option ( i use swap magic 3.6 plus and its great) secondly there is no need to change the region as most mod chips and swap magic support import booting , i have a version 7 ps2 and as far as reliability its great, i have no compliaints or problems at all, mind i dont know how it stacks up agains't teh rest as far as reliability goes. i'm sure there are a few lemons to watch out for .

GL and welcome to the wonderfull world of the PS2 :D

Thanks for the info.

So, would a brand new standard model (large) PS2 right off the shelf be my best bet for compatibility? And from what I've heard, I'm assuming that I'd have to mess with the laser in order to get it to read +RW or -RW discs at all. Is this true?

Methinks I'll be looking into a solderless mod or a flip top. Any specific recommendations?
