I wrote a program that works great for for Auto-copying/backing up DVD Movies. Some of the main features are: Auto-compress the DVD contents for you, starting with the menus and extras, and only compress the main movie if the backup will still not fit on a 4.7GB DVD. It will auto-purge the "Unreferenced Material" folder (by changing the compression to still image)

Here's the readme file(a link to the program is on the page).
http://www.vanrenier.com/sw/autocopy/

A direct link to the program (which has the readme included) is located here: http://www.vanrenier.com/sw/autocopy/autocopy20.zip

Please check it out and provide me some feedback.

Thanks,

Van

If you really feel that people can benefit from this, you should create a tutorial for it, maybe throw in some screen shots and post it in the user submitted guides thread or create the tutorial and submit it to the aD staff.

@VAN
Tried 'Autocopy' and it does what it says.
Instead of waiting for the hookup to 'DVD decrypter' to be implemented, I just ran 'anydvd' in the background (maybe a future option to save a mouseclick?).
I think this program has the potential to automate the DVD backup chore which I find tedious.
I suppose many people are in the hands on, tinkering and adjusting-the-output school, but that's not for me.
Thanks again.

i get several problems,

I in the 'set up' part i chose my F: drive for source. I go to run and when it chooses the disk to analyze it chooses my E: drive then shrink gives me an error message about there being no disk in the drive! (obviously since there is a blank in that drive)

then after a little bit, i get an oversized dvd estimation (red on teh bar) then i get tons of strange error messages.

Did you happen to SAVE the setting in the setup GUI before exiting it?

The Setup GUI will soon become the startup window, and will verify all settings prior to closing that GUI and moving on.

That for your input, though.
During the execution there should be two log files created (one is a master, and the other will have be located in the LOGS\ folder, having the name of the title of the DVD (in this case -since it tried using the blank drive, the title would be a dated format YEAR-MON-DAY_HOUR-MIN-SEC.txt.

The program does (or has been) verifying there is a DVD in the selected drive before even trying to start the process (after the GUI), so I don't see how it would get as far as you state, but... I guess it is possible.

the DVD must also comply with standard DVD authoring format before allowing to continue (must have the VIDEO_TS folder and have the VOBs inside.), etc...

If you could send me those logs files, it would help me figure out what went wrong. email is in the readme file or the webpage sited above.

Thanks,

Van

I ran 'Autocopy' today without incident.
My source (and destination) are the same drive.Perhaps that's why I had no problem?

Actually i tried that, and it worked, but when i analyzed it half-way through it popped up an error message about compression, and i continued manually after the analization.

Thanks to everyone for providing feedback.
I'm almost finished with the next release.

Some of the new features/fixes:
Support for DVD Decrypter (in same folder or different.
Support for DVD Shrink in different folder.
Provides Free HDD space, when target location is selected.
Allows for user-selection of enabling DVD Decrypter or not at startup.
The 10-second timer to auto-start "run", now works.
(and more I can't remember at the moment)

I'm still working on;
Supporting different source/target DVD drives
Auto-naming 'generic' dvd titles/labels with Date-Time formats
(Currently has 60sec timeout allowing user to input a title)
Working on why submitted log files indicate compression errors.
Having the 'setup GUI as the main startup window.
Changing most of the Radio buttons in Setup to Checkboxes.

It should be ready by tomorrow night or Friday evening.

any chance that you fixed the problem i had?

If this version is better you should talk to an admin about submitting it to the software section

I did fix a number of things like that, but can't verify if it will fix your particular scenario.

If you're interested in getting the current build, you can check it out, and give me some feedback. (and the log files). :)
