Problems with external DVD writer...

I just got an DVD Writer:
EMPREX DVD+-R/RW Writer 8X External USB 2.0
the model is DRW1108UI 8X
Disc I'm using: Memorex DVD-R 4.7GB

I try to copy an ISO file to the disc but fail every time, actually I failed to burn anything
with DVDdecrypter, when I start copying, it always freeze at the writing Leadin screen in the beginning, I tried wait for 30 minutes it still froze there and I can't even cancel, I need to turn off the whole thing to stop
With Alcohol 120%, the same thing happens, just right at the beginning like 0.2% it gives me error saying the disc cannot be record
(I read many posts for burning games, I followed every single step for copying ISO file, I did nothing wrong)

Another problem:
I even try to just copy a small video to the disc with Easy CD/DVD Creator comes with the packet, when I start copying, it keeps asking me to put in a blank disc even though I already put one in

Some others notes:
my computer sometimes completely freeze when i put insert a DVD-R into the drive, everything stop working unless i get the disc out, sometimes even worse I need to turn off the thing to get other things to work again

so you mean the memorex disc is not good?
then what kind of DVD-R is good for burning??
