I have a very slow crappy 433 mhz celery processor with 384 megs of ram . My average dvd to vcd encoding time is about 15-17 hours with the lowest quality setting. On high quality it takes about 28 hours. I'm curious about how long it takes others to encode dvd to vcd and .avi to vcd. I know a lot has to do with encoding settings and processor speed but I'm just curious. I'm thinking about getting a pentium 4 3GHz with 512-1000 megs of ram computer in the future. I'm sure that would make a hugh difference. I would have bought it now, but money is tight.

Well it depends on what encoder I use....

When useing the "MainConcept Encoder" I can encode a 2 Hour movie to VCD in about 30 minutes and with "Tmpgenc" it takes maybe 45 minutes and with ConemaCraft encoder it takes about 20 minutes....

I have a P-4 2.6ghz Overclocked to 3.2ghz with a Gig of Dual Channel DDR400.....

But why Make VCD"s?? The Quality is Crappy and you have to Put most movies on at least 2 CD-R"s and there are Inherant Playback problems with VCD"s Like Jumpy playback and Pixelation....

Why not just Get a DVD Burner?? with a DVD Burner you could Fit up to 4 Full VCD Movies on a Single DVD-R if you wanted to make VCD quality DVD"s, and Blank DVD"s are Cheaper than Blank CD-R"s on a MB per MB Basis and you can Buy a New DVD Burner for $39 US and 50 Blank DVD"s for another $15.....

Cheers

He did say money was tight, but a dvd burner is a very good investment.
