First, let me say that I have burned a LOT of DVD+R's and been able to play them in my "old" DVD player, even using some "cheap" no-name media.
The other day, I found a good deal on some HP brand DVD+R disks as well as FujiFilm brand DVD+R's, but they won't play in my DVD player. I brought the DVDRs to a friends house who has a newer DVD player, they worked fine in his.
Could it be that this newer DVD+R media I have won't play in my old DVD player, but the old media will?
Is there something I can do so these new DVD+R's will work?
I burned with both myDVD and Sony's DVD Architecht Studio.
Does your dvd burner have the ability to booktype the plus format media to dvd-rom? Not all burners can do this. The booktyping to dvd-rom makes your backups more compatable on stand alone players.
What is your burner brand name and model #?
I ran into a spindle of verbatim +4x,ricohjpn-r01's that had problems playing on a ps2.It played other ricohjpn-r01s from maxell and sony, just something different about those verbatim ricohs.
Ricohs are pretty decent, but there is a lot better stuff out there for the same price, maybe even cheaper.
HP media is full of cmags. This manufacturer is called c-magnetics corp. That is one of the media manufacturers to stay away from. I have a few of the phillips and teon cmags, but I only burn them at 2.4x and don't put anything important on them. They work ok for me,but many other members do have issues with them.Memorex is also notorious for using cmag media.
When you look at the MID codes, You want the good quality manufacturers like:
Taiyo yuden-ty-g01/tyg02/Yuden000-T02
Verbatim: MCC-003-Mitusbishi Chemical Corp.
Maxell-002-00- Hitachi made media in japan.
Ritek: g04/g05/r02/r03
It's hard to tell who actually makes your blank dvds. That's why taiyo yuden and verbatim data life plus are highly recommended.
Fuji and maxell have some good to great manufacturers.
Tdk is very good in dash, but cmags are in most of their plus format.
I do look at the labels of on sale media for: Made in Japan or Fabrique Au Japan. Japan makes the finest media, like taiyo yuden and hitachi. For the plus format, I love the yuden000-T02 from sony and fuji +8x and the Maxell-002-00 in the japanese maxells +8x. Just look those labels over good.
HP media in an HP computer? Well actually you luckily didn't get the HP burner. Not very good reports on their burners.I've got the HP 460c lightscribe, but didn't meet my compatability standards.
Those backups that don't play: How do those backups look when you view them on your pc using the dvd burner that produced them?
Yeah the YUDEN000-T02 are great!!!! The average PI errors are less than 1 for me. Also, they work on my Samsung DVD-611 which does not even play some factory pressed DVDs!!!! Now my final test will be if they work on my Toshiba DVD player.
Mine are Fujifilm DVD+R made in Japan. Sony DVD+R made in Japan are also the same.
Also, when burning movies, whether the media is good or bad, burn at 4x max. The slower you burn, the more compatibility it seems you have.
