I am trying to use the "Copy entire DVD-9 movie to a single DVD-R using DVD Shrink" guide provided on this site http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvd_shr...
I have used DVD Decrypter to decode the DVD (The Magic Roundabout) and this worked perfectly, then used DVD Shrink 3.1 as instructed to remove anything unwanted to improve the compression ratio for the main movie. This also worked fine.
I then tried to Backup the movie striaght to my DVD drive, and the encoding worked fine too, however when it tried to burn the DVD it ran into problems.
It spat out both the Packard Bell DVD-R and Memorex DVD+RW blank discs that I have with errors. I got the Burn Error information below. If anyone can help I'd be very grateful as I used to be able to burn DVD's from this drive (although it's been a long while since I have done, and I have installed new stuff, and I think also gone up to XP SP2 since...)
Thanks !!

First you should remove your Nero serial numbers from your first post. Numbers beginning with 1A23.
You should update your Shrink. 3.1 is quite old. You can get Shrink here at Afterdawn or from my site:
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/dvdshrink32setup.zip
You should update your Nero as well:
http://nero.com/us/nero-up.php
Nero makes a registry checker and driver cleaner tool as well. After removing and installing various programs the registry checker utility will correct the bugs that this seems to cause in Nero.
http://nero.com/us/Driver_CleanTool_and_RegistryChecker.html
You have DMA off it should be on:
CdRomPeripheral : DVDRW IDE1008 atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off
Here is a guide:
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/dvdguide005.html
I would use different media like Taiyo Yuden, Ritek or Verbatim. You are getting an "illegal disc" message. That may be caused by the first error though so it might not be the problem. I don't care for either of the DVD brands you are using...
Make sure your firmware for your burner is up to date as well.
Here is ScubaPete's guide for Shrink/Nero:
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/petesguide2.html
Try the above and see if things improve. Let us know.
Frank

Didn't even look at your error yet, doesn't matter - you need to output from DVDShrink to your harddisk, a file on your harddisk (either ISO, or VOB files in a Video_TS folder).
Don't output to DVD directly...
You're using Nero I see.
You have a DVD player as master, and your DVD-RW as slave, on the same (secondary) controller. This is bad; a basic hardware misconfiguration.
Y'see, the burner is newer/faster/better, and it should be master.
Its DMA (direct memory access) will then be enabled. It might even come up UltraATA-66, with a good cable.
Now it's slaved to something older and it won't even DMA.
Never gonna get good burns with that!
Just pull the Samsung DVD out - who needs it?
Make your burner master (move the little jumper on the back).
Or WTF, leave the Samsung but make it slave or disconnect it internally (don't have the little plastic panel to fill the hole in your casefront? LoL :^)
What else...
Update your firmware to recognise new media! Nero is trying to burn 2x speed (compatibility), it doesn't recognise your blanks.
If you cannot find firmware, you must use older/different blanks.
Stay away from Memorex, the lads always say to anyone who'll listen...
I use DVD+R (got some Sony's right now).
What else?
As if you don't have enough problems, it's reporting a DRM error at the very end :^(
This could be Digital Rights Management (protected DVD content) but I dunno...
You are basically authoring the DVD with Nero here, I believe, and it is unnecessary. Write your output from Shrink to a harddisk; Shrink writes beautiful VOB files, a compliant DVD already.
You can then burn at your leisure, trying different blanks, whatever (you don't have to run Shrink each time!)
Those guides were written when harddisks were smaller and space was more expensive... these days, you need a hundred gigs free, 4.7GB is nothing :^)
Hope this helps,
Let us know how you get along.

Another thing to check on:
Quote: Last address to be written: 2286111 (508:01.36, 4465MB)
This is pushing it. You may want to reduce that backup target. It's very easy and it can prevent a lot of issues.
Open up dvd shrink
Edit
Preferences
Target dvd size, click on dvd-5/scroll till custom
Enter 4360 to the right side of custom
OK.
That will be your future burn target until you change it again.
A regular dvd will tell you it is 4.7 gigs, but through all the conversions,it is only about 4.38 gbs.
By reducing your backup target to 4.36 gbs, you'll keep the burn from reaching the outer edge.Media quality can contribute to problems on that outer edge with uneven dye.
Optodisc is not one of the better manufacturers. You may want to take the backup target to 4300 mbs.
Memorex +rw's also not that great, but at least you can erase them and practice on them.
Poor media can cause many issues. Throwing out your dma is one of them.
Check into the latest firmware update for your burner.

Hi, well I have:
Updated to Shrink. 3.2
Updated Nero to 6.6.0.16
Run the Drive Cleaner and Registry Checker from Nero (Did remove a driver, but the Registry Checker didn't seem to do anything)
Followed the guide to try to turn on DMA
Swapped by DVD Burner and DVD ROM round, the Burner is now the Master (and DMA now appears to be on !)
And I used Shrink to write the VOB file to my hard drive so I can mess around with trying to burn the DVD.
Changed Shrink's target dvd size to 4360.
I have not yet bought any different DVD Media, but I will do going forward (especially if I can't get these to work)
Things seem better as at least it now recognises the Memorex DVD+RW, and has asked me to format the disk before I use it....
Well we shall see what happens !
BTW I noticed in DVD Decrypter that I was using the Windows drivers, and not the ASPI drivers ? Not sure I totally understand this, is this correct ? Or could this be causing problems for me too ?
Well keep you posted on burn success (or failure)
Thanks for all the advice so far....

Well that was fun ! Went through whole erase disk process, then through whole burn process. It did indeed work successfully for the Memorex DVD+RW, and plays OK on my PC (not on my home DVD Player though, but I guess that's because it cannot read DVD+RW disks)
Still will NOT recognise the Parkard Bell DVD+R disk (which DO read in my home DVD player)
So I guess buying new media is the way to go, and maybe also a new drive, are there any suggestions ?
What depresses me most is that I have several Packard Bell DVD's that I burnt without a problem several months ago....
Thanks for all the help !
